The beloved physician Luke shared after Paul, Barnabas and their companions, “passed throughout Pisidia, they came to Pamphylia”, and in chapter fourteen and verse twenty-five of the book of Acts Luke shared how the apostles, “preached the word in Perga” and “they went down into Attalia”, where we read:
And when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down into Attalia:
The verse begins, “And when they had preached the word in Perga, ...” Luke began with the words, “and when they had preached the word” which means “and after the time and moment Paul, Barnabas and their companions heralded, declared and proclaimed the speech, sayings, decrees, mandates and orders of God concerning His good news of salvation” “in Perga” or “within Perga whose name means earthy and was a town in Pamphylia, on the river Cestius, at a distance of 7 miles (10 km) from its mouth, and famous in antiquity for the worship of Artemis (Diana)” the following happened. Luke shared how “Paul, Barnabas and their companions” heralded the “word of the gospel” to the people within the town of “Perga” and then proceeded to the following.
The verse continues, “... they went down into Attalia:” Luke added the words, “they went down” or “Paul, Barnabas and their companions descended” “into Attalia” which means “toward Attalia which means Jah's due season and was a maritime city of Pamphylia in Asia, very near the borders of Lycia, built and named by Attalus Philadelphus, king of Pergamos, now called Antali”. Luke shared how “Paul, Barnabas and their traveling companions” continued to travel and descended to the town of “Attalia”.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn more about the travels of “Paul, Barnabas and their companions”. There were more places and people to reach with the gospel of Jesus Christ, and these apostles continued on their journey passing through “Perga” and toward “Attalia”. God wants people to know He is willing to forgive their sins, and He gave His Son Jesus to die on the cross to pay for them. Jesus was raised three days later and this enabled “everlasting life” to be promised to anyone who believes. Those who are wise will carefully study the travels of “Paul, Barnabas and their companions” to discover a God given desire put within them to share the “good news” of Jesus Christ with anyone anywhere.
Next time Luke shares how Paul and Barnabas, “sailed to Antioch”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
