Luke the beloved physician shared how Paul and Silas were beaten and put in prison for delivering a “damsel” from an “evil spirit” that caused her to divine for her “masters” who were now without their profits. “And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed. And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled. But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do yourself no harm: for we are all here. Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas, And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved, and your house”, and in chapter sixteen and verse thirty-two of the book of Acts Luke shared how Paul and Silas spoke unto the jailer, “the word of the Lord” where we read:
And they spoke unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.
The verse begins, “And they spoke unto him the word of the Lord, ...” Luke began with the words, “and they spoke unto him” which means “and Paul and Silas uttered, declared and proclaimed to the jailer”, “the word” or “the speech, sayings, decrees, mandates and moral precepts” “of the Lord” which means “belonging to the One to whom a person or thing belongs about which he has power of deciding; master, and the title given to God the Messiah”. Luke shared how “Paul and Silas” began to share “God's word” with the “jailer”.
The verse goes on to say, “... and to all that were in his house.” Luke continued with the words, “and to all” or “and to each, every, the whole and everyone” “that were in his house” which means “who stayed, lived or abode within the jailer's home”. Luke shared how “Paul and Silas” also shared “God's word” with the people who were in the jailer's household.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the sharing of the word of God continued not only with the “jailer” from Philippi, but also to all the people who were in his home. God wants everyone to know His word. He desires a personal, loving relationship with every person who believes and trusts in His Son Jesus. When they come to Him, He will teach them His ways and guide them into all truth. Those who surrender themselves to Jesus begin a walk with the Lord Jesus that will continue all their days, and learning from His word will expand their knowledge and faith in God and overflow to all the people they know.
Next time Luke shares how the jailer, “took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
