Luke the beloved physician wrote how Paul and the men with him, “sailed away from Philippi after the days of unleavened bread, and came unto them to Troas in five days; where we abode seven days. And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight. And there were many lights in the upper chamber, where they were gathered together. And there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep: and as Paul was long preaching, he sunk down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead. And Paul went down, and fell on him, and embracing him said, Trouble not yourselves; for his life is in him. When he therefore was come up again, and had broken bread, and eaten, and talked a long while, even till break of day, so he departed”, and in chapter twenty and verse twelve of the book of Acts Luke shared how, “they brought the young man alive” where we read:
And they brought the young man alive, and were not a little comforted.
The verse begins, “And they brought the young man alive, ...” Luke began with the words, “and they brought” which means “and the fellow believers in Troas carried, lay hold of and lead” “the young man alive” or “the youthful male, Eutychus, living, breathing and full of life”. Luke shared how the fellow believers lead “Eutychus” who was alive again back to where the “disciples of Jesus” were gathered.
The verse continues, “... and were not a little comforted.” Luke added the words, “and were not” which means “and neither and in no way existed as” “a little comforted” or “moderately or slightly encouraged, strengthened and consoled”. Luke shared how the “disciples of Jesus” who were gathered in the upper room in Troas were greatly encouraged and consoled when they brought “Eutychus” to them again.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the believers in Troas were overjoyed when they saw “Eutychus” alive again. “Paul” performed a miracle upon him, and those who saw “Eutychus” living and breathing were strengthened and encouraged by his appearance. God loves people, and His desire is to have them trust and believe in His Son Jesus to be forgiven of their sins, granted everlasting life and enjoy miracles in His Kingdom. Those who carefully consider this story about “Paul and Eutychus” should yield themselves to Jesus who alone provides the miracle of eternal salvation through His death on the cross and subsequent resurrection.
Next time Luke shares how Paul and his traveling companions, “went before to ship, and sailed unto Assos”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
