Luke the beloved physician wrote, “And it came to pass, that after we were gotten from them, and had launched, we came with a straight course unto Coos, and the day following unto Rhodes, and from there unto Patara: And finding a ship sailing over unto Phenicia, we went aboard, and set forth. Now when we had discovered Cyprus, we left it on the left hand, and sailed into Syria, and landed at Tyre: for there the ship was to unlade her burden”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse four of the book of Acts Luke shared when Paul and the men with him found, “disciples, we tarried there seven days” where we read:
And finding disciples, we tarried there seven days:
who said to Paul through the Spirit, that he should not go up to Jerusalem.
The verse begins, “And finding disciples, we tarried there seven days:” Luke began with the words, “and finding disciples” which means “and discovering by searching students, pupils and attendants of Jesus”, “we tarried there seven days” or “we, Luke, Paul and the men traveling with them, stayed and remained in Tyre for seven sunrises and sunsets”. Luke shared how he, Paul and the others traveling with them “found” fellow believers in Jesus in “Tyre” and stayed there for “seven days”.
The verse goes on to say, “... who said to Paul through the Spirit, that he should not go up to Jerusalem.” Luke continued with the words, “who said to Paul” which means “the disciples in Tyre uttered, declared and proclaimed to Paul whose name means small or little” “through the Spirit” or “by way and means of the third person of the triune God, the Holy Spirit, who is coequal and co-eternal with the Father and the Son”, “that he should not go up to Jerusalem” which means “that “Paul” should not ascend toward Jerusalem whose name means set you double peace and is the capital of Palestine”. Luke shared how the “disciples in Tyre” told “Paul” that he should not ascend to the city of “Jerusalem”.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how he, “Paul” and the other men traveling with them found other “disciples of Jesus” in “Tyre”, and they warned “Paul” about going to “Jerusalem”. “Paul” was determined to travel to “Jerusalem”, and we shall see how he responded to their “warnings” along his way. God had a plan for “Paul”, and even though others were giving him advice in his travels, “Paul” would follow the leading of the “Lord Jesus”. God desires to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when they submit to Him, He will forgive their sins, grant them everlasting life and lead them according to His purposes and plan. Let all who read these words carefully examine “Paul's” travels and warnings as they follow for themselves the leading of God's Holy Spirit.
Next time Luke shares, “when we had accomplished those days, we departed and went our way”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
