Paul Sailing Again - Acts 20:15

The beloved physician Luke wrote as Paul was teaching until midnight in Troas, “there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep: and as Paul was long preaching, he sunk down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead. And Paul went down, and fell on him, and embracing him said, Trouble not yourselves; for his life is in him. When he therefore was come up again, and had broken bread, and eaten, and talked a long while, even till break of day, so he departed. And they brought the young man alive, and were not a little comforted. And we went before to ship, and sailed unto Assos, there intending to take in Paul: for so had he appointed, minding himself to go afoot. And when he met with us at Assos, we took him in, and came to Mitylene”, and in chapter twenty and verse fifteen of the book of Acts Luke shared how Paul and his companions, sailedto more cities where we read:

And we sailed there, and came the next day over against Chios; and the next day we arrived at Samos, and tarried at Trogyllium; and the next day we came to Miletus.

The verse begins, “And we sailed there, and came the next day over against Chios; Luke began with the words, “and we sailed there” which means “and we, Luke, Paul and their fellow disciples traveled by boat at Metylene”, “and came the next day” or “and arose and appeared the following sunrise to sunset” “over against Chios” which means “opposite of Chios whose name means snowy and is an island in the Aegean, between Samos and Lesbos, not far from the shore of Lydia”. Luke shared how he, Paul and their fellow disciples boarded a ship and traveled to a location that was opposite to the city of “Chios”.

The verse goes on to say, “and the next day we arrived at Samos, and tarried at Trogyllium; and the next day we came to Miletus.” Luke continued with the words, “and the next day” which means “and the following sunrise to sunset” “we arrived at Samos” or “we, Luke, Paul and their fellow disciples came to an island off that part of Asia Minor where Ionia touches Caria named Samos which means a sandy bluff”, “and tarried at Trogyllium” which means “and stayed, dwelt and abode the name of a town and a promontory of Ionia, not far from the island of Samos, at the foot of Mt. Mycale between Ephesus and the mouth of the river Maeander”; “and the next day” or “and the following sunrise to sunset” “we came to Miletus” which means “we, Luke, Paul and their fellow disciples came to Miletus which means pure white fine wool and was a maritime city, now nearly 10 miles (16 km), from the coast of Caria or Ionia, near the mouth of the Maeander and 35 miles (55 km) from Ephesus”. Luke shared more about he, Paul and their fellow disciples travels by “ship” as he told about them arriving at “Samos, Trogyllium and Miletus”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn more about the travels of “Paul, Luke and the fellow disciples of Jesus” who journeyed with them. “Philippi, Assos, Chios, Samos, Trogyllium, and Miletus” all had people within them, and these places could be reached with the gospel. God's love extends to the entire world even as Jesus said, For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (See John 3:16), and anyone who submits to Him will be forgiven of their sins and granted eternal life with God. Let all who read these words consider these cities and the lost people within them and realize that God wants to reach lost people in every city around the world with His “good news” of salvation.

Next time Luke shares how,Paul had determined to sail by Ephesus, because he would not spend the time in Asia, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
