In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Jericho. And they did eat of the old corn of the land on the morrow after the passover, unleavened cakes, and parched corn in the selfsame day”, and in chapter five and verse twelve of the book of Joshua, we learn how Joshua or the writer said,“the manna ceased on the morrow after they had eaten of the old corn of the land”, where we read,
And the manna ceased on the morrow after they had eaten of the old corn of the land;
neither had the children of Israel manna any more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.
,
The verse reads, “And the manna ceased on the morrow after they had eaten of the old corn of the land;” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and the manna ceased” which means “and the manna which means ‘what is it’ and was the bread from Heaven that fed the Israelites for 40 years of wilderness wanderings, desisted, rested and stopped” “on the morrow” or “upon the next day” “after they had eaten” which means “following the time they, the people of Israel, had consumed and devoured” “of the old corn” or “pertaining to the stored grain or produce” “of the land” which means “belonging to the district, region, territory and country”. Joshua or the writer said the “manna” from heaven stopped being supplied on the next day after the people of Israel began to consume the stored grain in the promise land.
The verse continues, “neither had the children of Israel manna any more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.” Joshua added the words, “neither had the children of Israel” or “no and not in any manner possessed the offspring and progeny belonging to Israel whose name means God prevails and is the name of the descendants and the nation of the descendant of Jacob” “manna any more” which means “manna which means ‘what is it’ and was the bread from Heaven that fed the Israelites for 40 years of wilderness wanderings”; “but they did eat” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover they, the people of Israel, consumed, devoured and ate” “of the fruit of the land” which means “from the produce, gain and crops belonging to the district, region, territory and country” “of Canaan” or “belonging to Canaan whose name means ‘lowland’ and was the land west of the Jordan peopled by the descendants of Canaan and subsequently conquered by the Israelites under Joshua” “that year” which means “that particular annual set of days”. Joshua or the writer said the offspring belonging to “Israel” possessed “manna” no longer because they consumed the crops from the promise land of “Canaan” within that particular annual set of days.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how the “bread from Heaven” stopped being given to the “children of Israel” following the time when they were eating from the “crops” in the promise land of “Canaan”. God had supplied their food, the “manna”, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness, but now that they were able to obtain food and produce from within the promise land, the “manna” was no longer needed. There is a time and season for all God does in our lives, and because He desires to direct us according to His will, He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised Him from the dead after three days. When we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and lead us according to His will and supply for our lives.
Next time we learn how Joshua sees, “a man over against him with his sword drawn”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
