Matthew shared how Jesus was “baptized” and “tempted” by the “devil”, and he shared how “angels” ministered to Him afterward. Jesus heard that John the Baptist was thrown into prison, and He left His hometown to dwell in “Capernaum” where He began His ministry. Jesus began to preach saying, “Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand”, and He called Peter, Andrew, James and John to be His followers. Matthew continued to share how Jesus' fame spread throughout Galilee, and many others were gathered unto Him. Jesus shared the “beatitudes” and how those who believe in Him will be “persecuted for righteousness sake” as well as being “blessed” by God for enduring. Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth: but if the salt has lost his savor, wherewith shall it be salted? it is therefore good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. You are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it gives light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Jesus continued, “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill”, and in chapter five and verse eighteen of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus declared, “till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law” where we read:
For
verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass,
one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
The verse reads, “For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, ...” Matthew began with the words, “for verily” which means “because, since and on account that truly, surely and at the end” “I say” which means “Jesus uttered, proclaimed and declared” “unto you” or “to His disciples”, “till heaven” which means “until the region above the sidereal heavens, the seat of order of things eternal and consummately perfect where God dwells and other heavenly beings” “and earth” which refers to “the arable land, country, territory and region” “pass” which means “perish and go away”. Jesus employed the “passing” of “heaven and earth” as a reference to His next statement.
The verse goes on to say, “... one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.” Matthew continued with the words, “one jot” which means “a single mark or minutest part of the smallest Hebrew letter” “or one tittle“ or “or a single extremity, apex or point which is used by grammarians of the accents and diacritical points” “shall in no wise” which means “will in no way or in the least” “pass from” or “perish and go away from” “the law” which refers to “the rule producing a state approved of God”, “till” or “until ” “all” which means “each, every, the whole and everyone” “be fulfilled” or “is completed and filled up”. Jesus made reference to the smallest punctuation marks within the Hebrew writing to show how no part of the “law” will be “unfulfilled”.
When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see the importance of Jesus “fulfilling” every aspect of the law. God knew His Son Jesus would be the Messiah to the world, and He would save every person who believes and trusts in Him. Until “heaven and earth” vanish, every punctuation mark within the “law and the prophets” will be fulfilled. God so desires to have a relationship with every person through His Son Jesus that He will insure that every part of the “law and the prophets” will be fully completed. This speaks to the value He sees in His “law” His “prophets” and His people. May all who read these words see the purpose and resolve of God to bring “salvation” to mankind.
Next time Jesus shares what happens when, “whosever therefore shall break one of these least commandments”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
