Matthew shared how Jesus was “baptized” and “tempted” by the “devil”, and he shared how “angels” ministered to Him afterward. Jesus heard that John the Baptist was thrown into prison, and He left His hometown to dwell in “Capernaum” where He began His ministry. Jesus began to preach saying, “Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand”, and He called Peter, Andrew, James and John to be His followers. Matthew continued to share how Jesus' fame spread throughout Galilee, and many others were gathered unto Him. Then Matthew wrote, “And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him”, and in chapter five and verse two of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus, “opened him mouth, and taught them” where we read:
And
he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
The verse reads, “And he opened his mouth, ...” Matthew began with the words, “and he opened” which means “and Jesus opened” “his mouth” or “the orifice in the face used for eating, drinking and speaking”. Matthew shared how Jesus began to speak to His disciples.
The verse continues, “... and taught them, saying.” Matthew added the words, “and taught” which means “imparted instruction, instilled doctrine, explained and expounded to” “them” or “the disciples”, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”. Matthew shared how Jesus gave instruction to His disciples who surrounded Him.
When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus began His “teaching ministry” to His disciples. While they were gathered to Him upon a mountainside, Jesus gave instructions to those before Him concerning the “Kingdom of Heaven” and those who are within it. God desires that all listen hear His Son Jesus, and as we study His words from the “Sermon on the Mount” let us be attentive to His every word.
Next time Jesus tells His disciples, “blessed are the poor in spirit”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
