Blessed are the Meek Matthew 5:5

Matthew shared how Jesus was “baptized” and “tempted” by the “devil”, and he shared how “angels” ministered to Him afterward. Jesus heard that John the Baptist was thrown into prison, and He left His hometown to dwell in “Capernaum” where He began His ministry. Jesus began to preach saying, “Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand”, and He called Peter, Andrew, James and John to be His followers. Jesus' fame spread throughout Galilee, and many others were gathered unto Him. Matthew wrote, And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him, and he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying, Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heavenBlessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted, and in chapter five and verse five of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus, “blessed are the meek” where we read:

Blessed
are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

The verse reads, Blessed are the meek: Matthew began with the word, “blessed” which means “oh how happy, supremely fortunate and well off” “are the meek” or “are the people of mild disposition and gentleness of spirit”. Jesus declared people who are of “gentle spirit” to be “oh so happy”.

The verse continues, for they shall inherit the earth.” Matthew added the words, “for they” which means “because, since and on account that those who are meek” “shall inherit or “will be heirs and receive by lot” “the earth” which refers to “the arable land, territory, country and region”. Jesus shared how the “meek” will “receive” the “earth” as their lot.

When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see how people who are of “gentle spirit”, according to Jesus, will “inherit” the earth. “Meekness” is not weakness and might better be described as “strength under control”. Jesus demonstrated “meekness” when He was on the earth because as the “Creator” of the world He could have easily exercised His power but restrained Himself from doing so. God desires to have a relationship with people that is contrary to the “ways” of the world, and those who are “meek” follow the example of Jesus.

Next time Jesus tells His disciples, “blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
