Matthew shared how Jesus was “baptized” and “tempted” by the “devil”. Matthew continued, “Then the devil left him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him. Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee. And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim”, and in chapter four and verse fourteen of his book, Matthew shares about another prophesy of Isaiah being “fulfilled” where we read:
That
it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying,
The verse reads, “ That it might be fulfilled ...” Matthew began with the words, “that it might” which means “so and in order that the word of God would” “be fulfilled or “be completed, consummated and rendered full”. Matthew shared from another prophesy which Jesus as the Messiah consummated while He was on the earth.
The verse goes on to say, “... which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying,” Matthew continued with the words, “which was spoken” which means “that was uttered, proclaimed and declared” “by Isaiah” or “through and by way of Isaiah whose name means Jehovah's help and was a famous Hebrew prophet who prophesied in the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah ” “the prophet” which means “the one who was moved by the Spirit of God and hence his organ or spokesman, solemnly declares to men what he has received by inspiration, especially concerning future events, and in particular such as relate to the cause and kingdom of God and to human salvation”, “saying” or “uttering, proclaiming and declaring”. Matthew referred once again to the “prophet Isaiah” as he prepared to show another “prophesy” Jesus fulfilled.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see over and over again how Jesus fulfilled Old Testament prophesies as He lived on the earth. No one else has come close to completing all the mandatory prophesies of the prophets of old. God sent His Son Jesus to “fill up completely” every prophesy spoken concerning the Messiah, and because He desired to “save” people from their sins, God insured that Jesus kept every one.
Next time Matthew shares Isaiah's prophesy about, “the land of Zebulon, and the land of Nephthalim” another prophecy by Isaiah Jesus so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
