People with Palm Branches Crying Hosanna - John 12:13

The apostle John wrote how, the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death. Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus. On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, ...”, and in chapter twelve and verse thirteen of his book John shared how the people, “took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel” where we read:

Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna:

Blessed is the King of Israel that comes in the name of the Lord.

The verse reads, “Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: John began with the words, “Took branches of palm trees” which means “the people gathered for the feast in Jerusalem began to lay hold of, remove, claim and procure branches from palm trees”, “and went forth to meet him” or “and arose to assemble and gather around Jesus” “and cried” which means “and vociferated or shouted aloud” “Hosanna” which means “O' save or save now”. John shared how the people who came to the “paschal feast” in Jerusalem gathered themselves unto Jesus, cut branches from palm trees and began to wave them while they shouted “Save now”.

The verse goes on to say, “Blessed is the King of Israel that comes in the name of the Lord.” John continued with the words, “Blessed is the King” which means “praise, celebration, favor and honor toward the leader, prince, sovereign, commander and lord of the land” “of Israel” or “belonging to Israel which means he shall be a prince of God” “that comes” which means “who arises and appears” “in the name of the Lord” or “by everything which the name covers, everything the thoughts or feelings which are aroused in the mind by mentioning, hearing and remembering belonging to the One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master, and the title given to God the Messiah”. John shared how the people who gathered themselves unto Jesus were praising and celebrating Him as the “sovereign and commander” of the land of “Israel” who arises and appears by the “Lord's name”.

When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn how the people began to ascribe to Jesus the title of “King” in their land and celebrate Him as the “One” who came in God's name. This was basically saying Jesus was the “Messiah, Christ and Savior” of “Israel”, and the people honored and respected Him in this manner. We can imagine people “waving palm branches” and shouting that He was indeed the “King” whom God sent, and their honor only heightened the awareness people had about Him. God loves people, and He wants them to honor His Son Jesus by surrendering their lives to Him as their “Savior and Lord”. Those who see Jesus for who He really is join this crowd and give Him honor, praise, glory and blessing for being the “King of Israel” and the Messiah who takes away the sins of the world.

Next time John shares how Jesus, “found a young donkey” and “sat thereon”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
