The apostle John wrote how Jesus told His disciples, “Lazarus is dead. And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent you may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him. Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellow disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him. Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already. Now Bethany was near unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off. And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother. Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house. Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if you had been here, my brother had not died”, and in chapter eleven and verse twenty-two of his book John shared how Martha said, “but I know … whatsoever you will ask of God, God will give it to you” where we read:
But I know, that even now, whatsoever you will ask of God, God will give it to you.
The verse reads, “But I know, that even now, whatsoever you will ask of God, ...” John began with the words, “But I know” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover I, Martha, understand, perceive and have discovered”, “that even now” or “that also and indeed at this point in time”, “whatsoever you will ask of God” which means “whatever thing you, Jesus, request from the Godhead and trinity” will incur the following reaction. John shared how “Martha” continued to speak to Jesus as she affirmed to Him that whatever He “asked” from God His Father would have the following result.
The verse continues, “... God will give it to you.” John added the words, “God will give it” which means “the Godhead and trinity shall grant, bestow, furnish and supply” “to you” or “to you, Jesus”. John shared how “Martha” expressed that “God” would provide whatever Jesus asked of Him.
When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how “Martha”, though discouraged and disappointed with Jesus' delay, still believed He had the power to “ask of God” anything He desired and God would provide it. “Martha” believed in Jesus, and though she did not understand why He “delayed” His coming, she continued to trust that He could alter the situation. God loves people to believe and trust in His Son Jesus, and those who do are benefited not only in this life, but also in the life to come. God wants to forgive the sins of people so they may have a personal relationship with Him, and those who surrender themselves to His Son Jesus will receive His grace and forgiveness that will last forever more. Let all who read these words believe in Jesus even when He does not perform as they desire.
Next time John shares how Jesus says to Martha, “your brother shall rise again”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
