The apostle John wrote how “Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead”, and in chapter twelve and verse two of his book John shared how, “there they made him a supper” where we read:
There they made him a supper; and Martha served:
but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him.
The verse reads, “There they made him a supper; and Martha served: ” John began with the words, “there they made him a supper” which means “the people prepared a formal meal at the home in Bethany for Jesus”; “and Martha served” or “and Martha whose name means she was rebellious attended to, waited upon and ministered the meal”. John shared how those within “Lazarus, Martha and Mary's home” prepared a meal for Jesus, and “Martha” specifically “waited upon” Him.
The verse continues, “but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him.” John added the words, “but Lazarus was one of them” which means “moreover Lazarus whose name means whom God helps was among the people within the house” “that sat at the table” which means “who was reclining and feasting together” “with him” or “alongside Jesus”. John shared how “Lazarus” was among those who were “feasting” together in the home.
When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we discover a normal and regular portion of Jesus' life. After He entered the town of Bethany, He went to “Martha, Mary and Lazarus' home” where they prepared a meal for Him. “Martha” was specifically mentioned as one who “served” Jesus, and “Lazarus” whom Jesus had raised from the dead was eating alongside Him. Jesus demonstrated God's love and care for people and His willingness to be “served” by them. Opening a home, preparing a meal and being with Jesus for fellowship and food point to a personal relationship with Him, and when a person submits their life to Jesus as their “Savior and Lord”, they shall be forgiven of their sins, have fellowship with God and inherit everlasting life in Heaven where they shall spend eternity enjoying being with one another.
Next time John shares, “then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
