John the apostle wrote how Martha told Jesus that she knew her brother would rise from the dead on the last day, however Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believes in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live”, and in chapter eleven and verse twenty-six of his book John shared how Jesus said to Martha, “whosoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Believe you this?” where we read:
And whosoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Believe you this?
The verse reads, “And whosoever lives and believes in me shall never die.” John began with the words, “and whosoever lives” which means “and whatever person whether male or female is alive, active, blessed and full of vigor” “and believes in me” or “and trusts in, relies upon, clings to and has confidence within me, Jesus” “shall never die” which means “will not at any time perish, suffer eternal death and be subject to eternal misery in hell”. John shared how Jesus said whoever is “alive” and puts their “faith and trust” in Him will “never” “perish” eternally.
The verse goes on to say, “Believe you this?” John added Jesus' words, “believe you” which means “do you, Martha, trust in, rely upon, cling to and have confidence within” “this” or “the idea that Jesus is the resurrection and the life and those who believe in Him will never die”? John shared how Jesus asked Martha whether she “believed” what He said.
When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus made it very clear that anyone who puts their “faith and trust” in Him will “never” die eternally. He asked Martha a question that every person must answer, “do you believe this?” Those who believe in Jesus will not perish eternally, and those who don't “believe” will perish. John the apostle wrote how Jesus previously said, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (See John 3:16), and this was Jesus' reason and purpose for coming. Those who are wise will “believe” in Jesus and allow Him to forgive their sins and grant them “everlasting life”.
Next time John shares how Martha says to Jesus, “yes, Lord: I believe you are the Christ, the Son of God”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
