John the apostle wrote how, “the people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record. For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle. The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive you how you prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him”, and in chapter twelve and verse twenty of his book John shared how, “there were certain Greeks among them” where we read:
And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast:
The verse reads, “And there were certain Greeks among them ...” John began with the words, “and there were certain Greeks” which means “and there existed particular people who were Greeks either by nationality whether natives of the main land or of the Greek islands or colonies” “among them” or “with the people who came to meet Jesus”. John shared how there were people with those who greeted Jesus who were “Greek” in nationality.
The verse continues, “... that came up to worship at the feast:” John added the words, “that came up to worship” which means “who arose, ascended and appeared to prostrate themselves, do homage and obeisance” “at the feast” or “at the paschal sacrifice or passover festival”. John shared how the “Greek” people ascended to “perform homage and obeisance” at the “passover” feast.
When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how there were people who were “Greek” who attended the “passover” festival alongside the people in the Jewish nation. God desires to save everyone in the whole world through belief and trust in His Son Jesus. Everyone is invited to receive Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, and those who are wise will “ascend to worship” like unto these “Greek” people.
Next time John shares how, “the same came therefore to Philip”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
