Luke the physician wrote how, “Saul certain days with the disciples which were at Damascus. And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God. But all that heard him were amazed, and said; Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this name in Jerusalem, and came here for that intent, that he might bring them bound unto the chief priests? But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving that this is very Christ. And after that many days were fulfilled, the Jews took counsel to kill him”, and in chapter nine and verse twenty-four of the book of Acts Luke shared how the Jews, “watched the gates day and night to kill him” where we read:
But their laying await was known of Saul. And they watched the gates day and night to kill him.
The verse begins, “But their laying await was known of Saul.” Luke began with the words, “but their laying await” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the Jews who wanted to kill Saul and plotted and planned against him” “was known of Saul” or “was learned, perceived and understood by Saul whose name means desired and was the Jewish name for Paul”. Luke shared how “Saul” knew the Jewish people who wanted to “kill” him were planning to do so.
The verse goes on to say, “And they watched the gates day and night to kill him.” Luke continued with the words, “and they watched the gates” which means “and the Jewish people who wanted to kill Saul observed, noticed, saw and observed the access or entry ways into the city” “day and night” or “every sunrise to sunset and every sunset to sunrise” “to kill him” which means “to destroy, abolish and murder Saul”. Luke shared how the Jewish people who wanted to “kill Saul” were observing the “entry way” of the city every “day and night”.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how “Saul” knew about the Jewish people's plan to “kill” him, and they were “watching” the “entryway” of the city every day and night so they could carry out their pernicious act. We shall see how “Saul” escapes their evil desire in our next verse, but for now let us know that God takes care of those who yield to His Son Jesus. God allowed “Saul” to know the plans of his adversaries, and He will speak into the lives of everyone who surrenders to His plan and purpose through Jesus. Let all who read these words submit to Him.
Next time Luke shares how, “the disciples took him by night, and let him down by the wall”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
