Letting Saul Down the Wall - Acts 9:25

Luke the physician wrote how, “Saul was certain days with the disciples which were at Damascus. And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God. But all that heard him were amazed, and said; Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this name in Jerusalem, and came here for that intent, that he might bring them bound unto the chief priests? But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving that this is very Christ. And after that many days were fulfilled, the Jews took counsel to kill him. But their laying await was known of Saul. And they watched the gates day and night to kill him”, and in chapter nine and verse twenty-five of the book of Acts Luke shared how, “the disciples took him by night, and let him down by the wall” where we read:

Then the disciples took him by night, and let him down by the wall in a basket.

The verse begins,Then the disciples took him by night, ... Luke began with the words, “then the disciples” which means “at that time the students, pupils and attendants of Jesus” “took him by night” or “ carried and brought Saul at nighttime” to do what happens next. Luke shared how the “believers and followers” of Jesus carried “Saul” at nighttime and did the following.

The verse continues, ... and let him down by the wall in a basket.Luke added the words, “and let him down by the wall” which means “and sent Saul in a loosened, slackened and relaxed position from a higher place to a lower beside the city wall” “in a basket” or “within a reed, plaited or lunch basket or hamper”. Luke shared how the “disciples” of Jesus “let Saul down” the “wall” that surrounded the city while sitting in a “hamper” made of reeds.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how “Saul” escaped the plan of the Jewish people who wanted to “kill” him. The fellow “disciples” of Jesus let “Saul” down the wall of the city and away from the “gate”. God “saved” “Saul” from those who wanted to “destroy” him and his ministry, and because “Saul” was to share the “good news” of Jesus Christ in many more places, he was preserved at this time. God loves people, and His desire is to have a personal relationship with everyone through His Son Jesus. When they submit to Him, He will forgive their sins and grant them everlasting life. Then He will employ them in the work of His Kingdom until the time when He calls them to be with Him. Let all who read these words understand, God will preserve them as they commit their faith and mission to Him.

Next time Luke shares how Saul, “assayed to join himself to the disciples”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
