The physician Luke wrote how, “Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest, and desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem”, and in chapter nine and verse three of the book of Acts Luke shared how, “suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven” where we read:
And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus:
and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven:
The verse begins, “And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus:” Luke began with the words, “and as he journeyed” which means “and while and during the time Saul traveled and traversed”, “he came near Damascus” or “Saul arose and appeared close to the city of Damascus whose name means silent is the sackcloth weaver and was one of the most ancient and important cities of Syria lying in a lovely and fertile plain at the eastern base of the Antilbanus”. Luke shared how “Saul” was close to the city of “Damascus” as he traveled when the following occurred.
The verse continues, “and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven:” Luke added words, “and suddenly” which means “and unexpectedly” “there shined round about him” or “there flashed all around Saul” “a light from heaven” which means “a brightness, brilliance and pure luminousness that came from the region above the sidereal heavens, the seat of order of things eternal and consummately perfect where God dwells and other heavenly beings”. Luke shared how unexpectedly a “brilliant light from heaven” surrounded “Saul”.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we discover how “Saul” not only received the “letters” to arrest the “disciples of Jesus” that he found in “Damascus”, but he acted upon his commission. However, God intercepted his purpose and plan by sending a “brilliant light” upon him as he traveled. God is able to intervene in anyone's life, and He does so in various ways to get their attention so they will yield themselves to His Son Jesus. God loves people, and His plan of “salvation” is available to everyone. Those who are wise will surrender to Jesus and be alert when God sends a “brilliant” interruption in their lives.
Next time Luke shares how Saul, “fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
