Luke the beloved physician wrote how Paul spoke to the people in the synagogue in Antioch and said, “When John had first preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. And as John fulfilled his course, he said, Whom think you that I am? I am not he. But, behold, there comes one after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loose. Men and brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and whosoever among you fears God, to you is the word of this salvation sent. For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him. And though they found no cause of death in him, yet desired they Pilate that he should be slain. And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a sepulcher. But God raised him from the dead. And he was seen many days of them which came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses unto the people. And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers, ...”, and in chapter thirteen and verse thirty-three of the book of Acts Luke shared to how Paul referred to the Psalm that says, “this day have I begotten you” where we read:
God has fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he has raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, You are my Son, this day have I begotten you.
The verse begins, “God has fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he has raised up Jesus again;” Luke began with the words, “God has fulfilled” which means “the Heavenly Father God completed, filled up and accomplished” “the same unto us their children” or “the promise of the coming Messiah to the offspring and progeny of the fore-fathers”, “in that he has raised up” which means “since and on account that God the Heavenly Father resurrected” “Jesus again” or “Jesus whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate to life another time”. Luke shared how “God the Heavenly Father” distributed the “selfsame” promise to their offspring and progeny that He gave to the “fore-fathers”.
The verse continues, “... as it is also written in the second psalm, You are my Son, this day have I begotten you.” Luke added the words, “as it is also written” which means “because, since and on account that the promise is delineated and formed in letters” “in the second psalm” or “within the second psalm which literally means a striking the chords of a musical instrument or a pious song”, “You are my Son” which means “you, the Messiah and Christ, exist as my, God the Heavenly Father's offspring and kinship”, “this day have I begotten you” or “upon this very day have I, God the Heavenly Father, engendered, caused to arise and regenerated you, the Messiah and Christ”. Luke shared how “Paul” referred to the second chapter of Psalms which was written by King David and spoke of God raising His Son Jesus from the dead. (See Psalm 2:7)
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how “Paul” referred to the prophetic word of God as expressed through King David in the second chapter of Psalms. Therein, God spoke of the “day” in which He would “regenerate” or resurrect Jesus from the dead. God's intention was to bring about the “redemption” of mankind, and because they were separated from Him by their sins, someone needed to “die” to pay for their sins. God sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for the sins of the world, and anyone who yields to Him will be forgiven of theirs sins. God raised Jesus from the dead to provide everlasting life to all who surrender themselves to Him, and thereby believers in Jesus will live with God forever. This “promise” of God is for everyone, and those who are wise will submit themselves to Jesus and align with the “promise and actions” of God.
Next time Luke shares how Paul refers to the Psalm that says, “I will give you the sure mercies of David”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
