The beloved physician Luke shared how Paul, “went down to Antioch. And after he had spent some time there, he departed, and went over all the country of Galatia and Phrygia in order, strengthening all the disciples”, and in chapter eighteen and verse twenty-four of the book of Acts Luke shared how, “a certain Jew named Apollos … came to Ephesus” where we read:
And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria,
an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus.
The verse reads, “And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, ...”: Luke began with the words, “and a certain Jew” which means “and a particular Jewish man as respects to origin, birth or religion” “named Apollos” or “who was called or known as Apollos whose name means given by Apollo and was a learned Jew from Alexandria and mighty in the scriptures who became a Christian and a teacher of Christianity”, “born at Alexandria” which means “who was birthed in the city of Alexandria in Egypt”. Luke shared about a “Jewish” man whose name was “Apollos” who was “born” in the city of “Alexandria” in Egypt.
The verse continues, “... an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus. Luke added the words “an eloquent man” or “a male human being who was learned in letters and skilled in literature and the arts”, “and mighty in the scriptures” which means “and being powerful, mighty and strong in influence with the Holy Scriptures”, “came to Ephesus” or “arose, appeared and entered Ephesus whose name means permitted and was a maritime city of Asia Minor, capital of Ionia and under the Romans, of proconsular Asia, situated on the Icarian Sea between Smyrna and Miletus”. Luke shared how “Apollos” who was “learned” and “powerful” in the “Holy Scriptures” appeared in the city of “Ephesus”.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn about a man whose name was “Apollos”. “Apollos” was known for being “skilled” and “powerful” in the “Holy Scriptures”, and he traveled to and entered the city of “Ephesus”. We shall learn more about “Apollos” in our next few verses, but for now let us understand God was at work in people who were previously unknown, and He is willing to be at work in every person who yields themselves to His Son Jesus as their “Savior and Lord”. God loves people, and regardless of their location, education or notoriety, He is willing to forgive their sins, grant them everlasting life and use them in His Kingdom to share with others His glorious gospel of salvation. May all who read these words make themselves available to Jesus.
Next time Luke shares how Apollos, “was instructed in the way of the Lord”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
