The beloved physician Luke wrote how Paul was in Ephesus, and “went into the synagogue, and spoke boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God”, and in chapter nineteen and verse nine of the book of Acts Luke shared what happened, “when diverse were hardened” where we read:
But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spoke evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus.
The verse begins, “But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spoke evil of that way before the multitude, ...”: Luke began with the words, “but when divers were hardened” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover at the time and moment certain ones of them were obstinate and stubborn”, “and believed not” or “and did not allow themselves to be persuaded to obey and comply”, “but spoke evil of that way” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover uttered, declared and proclaimed cursing, reviling and abuse pertaining to the teachings and manners of the Kingdom of God set forth by Paul” “before the multitude” or “in front and in the presence of the crowd and great number of people”. Luke shared how some of the “Jewish people” whom “Paul” taught did not “believe” him, and because they had “hard hearts” not only did they not comply, but they also aroused the crowd of people by speaking wickedly about it in front of a crowd that was gathered.
The verse continues, “... he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus.” Luke added the words, “he departed from them” or “Paul left and went away from the multitude at Ephesus”, “and separated the disciples” which means “and marked off and excluded in a good way the pupils, attendants and students”, “disputing daily in the school” or “conversing, having discourses, arguing and discussing each sunrise to sunset within the vacation or leisure spot” “of one Tyrannus” which means “belonging to a certain man named Tyrannus whose name means sovereign and was an Ephesian in whose school Paul taught the gospel”. Luke shared how “Paul” left the people who did not believe his words and attempted to arouse the crowd against them, and went to “Tyrannus'” leisure place where he continued teaching and persuading other Jewish people.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how “Paul” left the “synagogue” and the Jewish people who opposed him and went to another location, “Tyrannus' school” or leisure place to continue giving instructions and convincing others concerning God's Kingdom. God offers His plan of salvation to everyone in the world, and anyone who believes and trusts in His Son Jesus will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life. Those who are wise will yield to Jesus Christ and receive all the teachings of the scriptures that are available to them.
Next time Luke shares how, “this continued by the space of two years”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
