The beloved physician Luke shared how Paul, “reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks. And when Silas and Timotheus were come from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in the spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ. And when they opposed themselves, and blasphemed, he shook his raiment, and said unto them, Your blood be upon your own heads; I am clean: from henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles”, and in chapter eighteen and verse seven of the book of Acts Luke shared how Paul, “departed from there, and entered into a certain man's house, named Justus” where we read:
And he departed from there, and entered into a certain man's house, named Justus,
one that worshiped God, whose house joined hard to the synagogue.
The verse reads, “And he departed from there, and entered into a certain man's house, named Justus, ...”: Luke began with the words, “and he departed from there” which means “and Paul left and went forth from the synagogue in Corinth where the Jews were located”, “and entered into a certain man's house” or “and appeared and came into a particular male human beings' home, dwelling place and habitation”, “named Justus” which means “who was known as and called Justus whose name means just and was of Titus who was a Christian at Corinth with whom Paul lodged”. Luke shared how “Paul” left the Jewish people in the synagogue in Corinth and went into a man's home whose name was “Justus”.
The verse goes on to say, “... one that worshiped God, whose house joined hard to the synagogue.” Luke continued with the words, “one that worshiped God” or “a person who revered, was devoted to and adored the Heavenly Father God”, “whose house” which means “whose dwelling place, habitation and abode” “joined hard to the synagogue” or “bordered and was contiguous to the sacred place where an assembly of Jews formally gathered together to offer prayers and listen to the reading and expositions of the scriptures”. Luke shared how “Justus” reverenced God, and his home was attached to the “synagogue” of the Jews.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how “Paul” left the Jewish people in the “synagogue” and went into the home of “Justus” which was attached to it. This was a convenient place for “Paul” to go, and since “Justus” “worshiped God”, this was a good environment for him as well. God loves people, and his desire is to have a personal relationship with them through His Son Jesus. God had His provision for “Paul”, and because he was sharing God's “gospel” with the world, “Paul” would find housing when he needed it. Anyone who submits themselves to Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life, and those who are wise will surrender to Him and live eternally with God.
Next time Luke shares how, “Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
