The beloved physician Luke shared how “Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, You men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are too superstitious. For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore you ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you. God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwells not in temples made with hands. Neither is worshiped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he gives to all life, and breath, and all things. And has made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation. That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us”, and in chapter seventeen and verse twenty-eight of the book of Acts Luke shared in God, “we live, and move, and have our being” where we read:
For in him we live, and move, and have our being;
as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.
The verse begins, “For in him we live, and move, and have our being;” Luke began with the words, “for in him we live” which means “because, since and on account that within God the Heavenly Father we, Paul and every other person, breathe, are active, blessed and enjoy true life”, “and move” or “and are set in motion, stir and are excited”, “and have our being” which means “and hold, own and possess hope and existence”. Luke shared how “Paul” told the “philosophers at Athens” everything a person does including “living, moving and being” exists within the presence and existence of God.
The verse goes on to say, “as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.” Luke continued with the words, “as certain also” or “even and indeed like particular ones” “of your own poets have said” which means “belonging to the people of Athen's personal authors, producers and doers declared, proclaimed and uttered”, “for we are also his offspring” or “because, since and on account that we, Paul and the people in the world, exist even so and indeed as God's kindred, family, stock tribe and nation”. Luke shared how “Paul” referred to how the personal “authors” of the “philosophers of Athen's” made declarations concerning mankind being God's “family or kindred”.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how “Paul” told the “philosophers” located in Athens that everyone in the world “lives, moves and has their being” within the existence and presence of God, and he referred to how their own “authors or poets” made declarations pertaining to the same. Everyone lives within the “presence” of God, and without him no one would have “life, movement or being”, and because He desires a personal relationship with each of them, He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross to pay the penalty of death for their sins. When they submit themselves to Him, He will forgive their sins, grant them everlasting life and give them life that is fulfilling and complete as they live before His eyes. Let all who read these words understand the presence of God surrounds them, and when they yield themselves to Him, they align with His plan to have them truly live before His eyes.
Next time Luke shares how Paul tells the people what to do, “ as we are the offspring of God”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
