Luke the beloved physician wrote while Paul was in the city of Corinth, the Lord spoke to him, “in the night by a vision”, and said, “Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not your peace. For I am with you, and no man shall set on you to hurt you: for I have much people in this city”, and in chapter eighteen and verse eleven of the book of Acts Luke shared how Paul, “continued there a year and six months” where we read:
And he continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.
The verse reads, “And he continued there a year and six months, ...”: Luke began with the words, “and he continued there” which means “and Paul remained and stayed in the city of Corinth for” “a year and six months” or “one year and six months time”. Luke shared how “Paul” remained in the city of “Corinth” for a year and a half.
The verse goes on to say, “... teaching the word of God among them.” Luke continued with the words, “teaching the word of God” or “holding didactic discourses, imparting instruction and instilling doctrine concerning the speech, utterances, mandates and decrees of the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit” “among them” which means “with the people who lived and dwelt in Corinth”. Luke shared how “Paul” imparted instruction and instilled doctrine” within the people who lived in “Corinth” while he was there.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how “Paul” stayed in the city of “Corinth” more than the usual time he spent in other places. Usually, Paul would move on to a new location. However, this place was filled with people who needed to hear the truth of God's word, and Paul was the right one to share it. God has His plan and timing for the person's life who yields and surrenders to His Son Jesus. First, He establishes a relationship with them through belief and trust Jesus. This provides forgiveness of sins and the promise of eternal life. Then God employs people to serve in His Kingdom in various places around the world. Sometimes their time in those places and positions is short, and other times, they are longer. Whichever God decides, they are meant to share with people the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ and the way to live as a Christian. Those who are wise submit to God and allow Him to lead them to their locations and time within them.
Next time Luke shares what happened, “when Gallio was the deputy of Achaia”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
