As
Amos the prophet continued to share how the LORD would expose those
who attempt to flee from His judgment, He proclaimed how God would
set His “eyes upon them for evil, and not for good”. In
chapter nine and verse five of his prophesy, Amos shared what would
happen when God “touches the land” where we read:
And
the Lord GOD of hosts is
he that touches the land, and it shall melt, and all that dwell
therein shall mourn: and it shall rise up wholly like a flood; and
shall be drowned, as by
the flood of Egypt.
The
verse begins, “And
the Lord GOD of hosts is
he that touches the land, and it shall melt, and all that dwell
therein shall mourn:” Amos
began with the words, “And
the Lord”
or “the title spoken in place of Yahweh in Jewish display of
reverence” “GOD”
which refers to “Yehovah or Jehovah who is the existing or becoming
One and the proper name of the one true God” “of
hosts”
which means “that which goes for as an army for warfare such as
angels” “is
he that touches”
or “reaches, strikes, approaches or arrives to” “the
land”
which refers to “the earth, country, territory, region and
district”, “and
it shall melt”
or “faint, soften, dissolve or dissipate”, “and
all that dwell therein”
which means “everyone who dwells, remains, sits and abides in the
land” “shall
mourn”
or “shall lament and bewail”. When God puts His touch upon the
land of Israel, it would “dissolve” and the reaction of the
people would be “mourning”.
The
verse continues, “and
it shall rise up wholly like a flood; and shall be drowned, as by
the flood of Egypt.” Amos
added, “and
it shall rise up” or
“”ascend, climb and grow or shoot up “wholly
like a flood”
or “completely as a river, stream or canal”;
“and shall be drowned”
which means “sunk, collapsed and caused to settle”, “as
by the flood”
or “the river, stream or canal” “of
Egypt”
which means “land of the Copts” and was “a
country at the northeastern section of Africa which is adjacent to
Palestine and through which the Nile flows”.
Not only would the land of Israel be “dissolved”, but it would be
“flooded” and “drowned”.
When
we think through these words of Amos, we see the power of the LORD to
carry out that which He has promised. The land of Israel would suffer
great affliction from the LORD which would cause the people within it
to “mourn”. Mourning shall be the reaction of all those
who face God's judgment, and those who reject Jesus Christ as their
Savior and LORD shall “mourn” for all of eternity. Jesus
described it as “weeping and gnashing of teeth” (Matthew
8:12). We have a certain amount of time before God's judgment falls
upon the world, and we are able to escape that judgment through a
relationship with Jesus Christ. Let all who read these words listen
to and obey the offer of salvation extended by the LORD before it is
too late.
Next
time Amos tell how the Lord GOD is “he
that builds his stories in the heaven”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
