As Amos the prophet
continued to share the judgment of God against those within Israel
who oppressed the “poor and needy”, he asked “shall
not the land tremble for this and every one mourn that dwells
therein”? He told them there would be a rising up “as a
flood, and it shall be cast out and drowned, as by the flood of
Egypt”, and in chapter eight and verse nine of his prophesy,
Amos shared how the LORD would “cause the sun to go down at
noon” which would
“darken the earth in the clear day” where we read:
And it shall come to
pass in that day, says the Lord GOD,
that I will cause the
sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day:
The
verse begins, “And it shall come to pass in that day,
says the Lord GOD,...” Amos
began with the words, “And
it shall come to pass in that day”
which is all one Hebrew word “yowm” and refers to “a division
of time or period”, “says”
or “utters, declares and proclaims” “the
Lord”
or “the title
spoken in place of Yahweh in Jewish display of reverence”
“GOD”
which refers to “Yehovah or Jehovah who is the existing One and the
proper name for the one true God”. The LORD was to make another
proclamation upon Israel through Amos.
The
verse goes on to say, “that I will cause the sun to go down at
noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day:” Amos
continued, “that I will cause the sun” which refers to
“the brilliant daytime sun” “to go down” or “enter,
fall, light upon or come to pass” “at noon” which means
“midday”, “and I will darken” which means “make
dark, black, dim and hidden” “the earth” or “the land,
country, territory, district or region” “in the clear day”
which refers to “the day-break, dawn or morning light”. God was
to make the “sun” to set in the middle of the day which
would make it dark like an eclipse upon all the land.
When we
consider these words of Amos, we see how God has even the “sun”
within His control, and should He desire for it to set in the middle
of the day, it is no obstacle for Him. His power and judgment was to
be miraculous, and no one would be able to stand against it. Jesus
Christ declared, “all power is given unto me in heaven and in
earth” (Matthew 28:18), and He will have all celestial spheres
including the “sun” at His disposal. Lest we forget, the “sun”
did go dark at midday when Jesus was crucified, those who are wise
realize with whom we have to do. Should we resist a relationship with
Him, woe be to those upon whom the “Son” shall set.
Next
time Amos tells the people in Israel how God will
“turn”
their “feasts
into mourning”
and their “songs
into lamentation”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
