After showing
Amos the “basket of summer fruit”, the LORD asked him to
declare what he saw. In chapter eight and verse two of his prophesy,
Amos heard the LORD use the “summer fruit basket” to show
that “Israel's” “end is come” where we read:
And he said, Amos, what do you see? And I said, A
basket of summer fruit. Then said the LORD unto me, The end is come
upon my people of Israel; I will not again pass by them any more.
The
verse begins, “And he said, Amos, what do you see? And I
said, A basket of summer fruit.” Amos
began with the words, “And he said”
which means “the LORD uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “Amos”
which refers to “the prophet of the Lord who prophesied in the
northern kingdom; native of Tekoa in Judah near Bethlehem and a
shepherd by trade” “what do you see”
or “what are you inspecting, perceiving and considering”? “And
I said” which means “Amos
uttered, proclaimed and declared” or responded. The LORD asked Amos
to tell Him what he was seeing which was a “summer fruit
basket”.
The
verse goes on to say, “Then said the LORD unto me, The
end is come upon my people of Israel; I will not again pass by them
any more.” Amos continued,
“The said” or
“uttered, declared and proclaimed” “the LORD”
which refers to “Yehovah or Jehovah who is the existing One and the
proper name for the one true God” “unto me” which
means “to Amos”, “the end”
or “the extremity” “is come” which
means “entered, been attained or fallen” “upon my
people” or “on Amos' nation,
persons, compatriots or country-men” “of Israel”
which means “God prevails” and was “the name of the descendants
and the nation of the descendants of Jacob”; “I will
not again pass” or “The LORD
would not add to, increase or do again” “by them”
which means “the people of
Israel” “any more”
or “ever again”. The LORD announced that He would not “connive
or acquiesce” with Israel any longer, and He judgment was certain
to fall.
When
we meditate upon these words of Amos, we see the ominous declaration
of the LORD. Israel's time had run out, and now even as the “the
summer fruit basket” indicated the end of the harvest season, so
Israel's time of “acquiescence” from the LORD had come. God
Almighty has given us an opportunity to receive Him as Savior and
LORD now, and we should not delay. If we wait too long, we shall be
even as Israel was and God's time of “grace” will be over. May
all who read take heed.
Next
time we
see Amos share about “songs
of howlings”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
