The physician Luke wrote how, “Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people”, and after being interrogated by the people in the synagogue, “all that sat in the council, looking steadfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel. Then said the high priest, Are these things so?”, and Stephen defended his faith by referring to how, “Abraham begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat the twelve patriarchs. And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt: but God was with him, and delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favor and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt”. However, later another Pharaoh arose who did not know Joseph who made the people of Israel as slaves in Egypt for four hundred years in which time, “Moses was born, and was exceeding fair, and nourished up in his father's house three months”, and in chapter seven and verse twenty-one of the book of Acts Luke shared how Stephen said when Moses was, “cast out, Pharaoh's daughter took him up” where we read:
And when he was cast out, Pharaoh's daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son.
The verse begins, “And when he was cast out, Pharaoh's daughter took him up, ...” Luke began with the words, “and when he was cast out” which means “and at the time and moment Moses was placed, set and put aside”, “Pharaoh's daughter” or “the daughter of Pharaoh which means his nakedness and was a common title of the native kings of Egypt” “took him up” which means “lifted Moses up and took him away”. Luke shared how “Stephen” told the “Sanhedrin” how the daughter of “Pharaoh” rescued “Moses” after he was set aside by his parents. (See Exodus 2)
The verse goes on to say, “... and nourished him for her own son.” Luke continued with the words, “and nourished him” which means “and nursed to promote growth to Moses” “for her own son” or “as the daughter of Pharaoh's own personal male child”. Luke shared how “Stephen” referred to how the daughter of “Pharaoh” took care of “Moses” as though he was her own child.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how “Stephen” continued to share the history of Israel with the “Sanhedrin” as he recalled “Moses” being rescued by the daughter of “Pharaoh”. God's “deliverer” was being raised by the daughter of the ones who were oppressing Israel, and God desires to “save” people from the enemy of their souls, Satan, through His Son Jesus. Those who yield to Jesus will be “rescued” from the penalty of sins, death, and they will be forgiven and granted everlasting life with God. Let all who study this “rescue” of “Moses” understand, this too was in God's plan to redeem mankind from an eternity of separation from Him.
Next time Luke shares how Stephen said, “Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
