John's Baptism - Acts 13:24

The beloved physician Luke wrote, “after the reading of the law and the prophets the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, You men and brethren, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say on. Then Paul stood up, and beckoning with his hand said, Men of Israel, and you that fear God, give audience. The God of this people of Israel chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they dwelt as strangers in the land of Egypt, and with an high arm brought he them out of it. And about the time of forty years suffered he their manners in the wilderness. And when he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Chanaan, he divided their land to them by lot. And after that he gave unto them judges about the space of four hundred and fifty years, until Samuel the prophet. And afterward they desired a king: and God gave unto them Saul the son of Cis, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, by the space of forty years. And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfill all my will. Of this man's seed has God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Savior, Jesus”, and in chapter thirteen and verse twenty-four of the book of Acts Luke shared how Paul referred to, “when John had first preached before his coming the baptism of repentance” where we read:

When John had first preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.

The verse begins, “When John had first preached before his coming ... Luke began with the words, “when John” which means “at the time and moment John whose name means Jehovah is a gracious giver and was known as John the Baptist” “had first preached” or “had announced and proclaimed” “before his coming” which means “in advance and prior to Jesus' arrival and coming on the scene”. Luke shared how “Paul” referred to “John the Baptist” and his proclamation in advance of “Jesus'” arrival.

The verse goes on to say, “... the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. Luke continued with the words, “the baptism of repentance” which means “the immersion and submersion pertaining to a change of mind, compunction and reversal” “to all the people” or “toward each, every, the whole and everyone of the human beings both male and female” “of Israel” which means “belonging to Israel whose name means he shall be prince”. Luke shared how “Paul” reminded the people in the synagogue how “John the Baptist” proclaimed “immersion in water” as a sign of their inward “change of mind” to “all” of the people who belonged to the nation of “Israel”.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how “Paul” referred to “John the Baptist” proclaiming to all the people of “Israel” “water baptism” as an outward sign of their inward “compunction to change”. “John the Baptist” lead people to believe and trust in Jesus, and anyone who studies the scriptures concerning him will discover his “fore-runner” roll in promoting Jesus. God loves people, and each step leading to Jesus was meant to provide “salvation” to mankind from their sins which would lead them to everlasting life. Let all who read these words yield themselves to God's Son Jesus who alone is able to provide them with eternal forgiveness of sins and everlasting life with God.

God Raised Up Jesus - Acts 13:23

Luke the beloved physician wrote, “after the reading of the law and the prophets the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, You men and brethren, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say on. And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfill all my will”, and in chapter thirteen and verse twenty-three of the book of Acts Luke shared how Paul said, “Of this man's seed has God … raised up … Jesus” where we read:

Of this man's seed has God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Savior, Jesus:

The verse begins, “Of this man's seed ... Luke began with the words, “of this man's” which means “from King David's”, “seed” or “offspring and progeny”. Luke shared how “Paul” referred to King David's offspring as he made the following statement.

The verse continues, “... has God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Savior, Jesus: Luke added the words, “has God” which means “the Heavenly Father God aroused, produced and caused to appear” “according to his promise” or “toward God's announcement of divine assurance of good” “raised unto Israel” which means “aroused, caused to appear and stirred up toward Israel whose name means he shall be prince” “a Savior” or “a deliverer and preserver”, “Jesus” whose name means “Jehovah is Salvation and is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate”. Luke shared how “God” the Heavenly Father “raised up” His Son “Jesus” to be the “deliverer and preserver” of mankind.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how “Paul” told the people in the synagogue in Antioch of Pisidia that “Jesus” came by “God the Heavenly Father's” design through “King David”. “Paul” desired to share the “good news” of “salvation” through Jesus Christ that God gave to mankind, and as he recounted step by step the history of Israel, he was leading to the point of sharing “Jesus” with the people. God loves people, and He desires to have a personal relationship with all of them. He sent “Jesus” into the world to save them from their sins and grant them everlasting life with Him. Those who yield to God's Son “Jesus” will be forgiven of their sins and live eternally with God in Heaven. Anyone who believes and trusts in “Jesus” surrenders to God's plan of “salvation” for mankind.

David Raised Up to be King - Acts 13:22

Luke the beloved physician wrote, “when Paul and his company loosed from Paphos, they came to Perga in Pamphylia: and John departing from them returned to Jerusalem. But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down. And after the reading of the law and the prophets the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, You men and brethren, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say on. And afterward they desired a king: and God gave unto them Saul the son of Cis, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, by the space of forty years”, and in chapter thirteen and verse twenty-two of the book of Acts Luke shared how Paul referred to how God, “raised up unto them David to be their king” where we read:

And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfill all my will.

The verse begins, “And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; Luke began with the words, “and when he had removed him” which means “and at the time and moment God put away and deposed Saul”, “he raised up unto them” or “God caused to appear, produced and stirred up to the people of Israel” “David” which refers to “the son of Jesse whose name means beloved” “to be their king” which means “to exist as the people of Israel's royal leader, prince, commander and lord of the land”. Luke shared how God deposed “Saul” as king of Israel, and replaced him with “David”.

The verse goes on to say, “to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfill all my will. Luke continued with the words, “to whom also he gave testimony” which means “to David even so and indeed God bore witness and record”, “and said” or “and uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “I have found David” which means “I, God the Heavenly Father, have discovered and known David whose name means beloved” “the son of Jesse” or “the male offspring and prodigy belonging to Jesse whose name means wealthy”, “a man after mine own heart” which means “a male human being toward and according to my, the Heavenly Father God's, own personal soul and mind as they are the fountain and seat of the thoughts, passions, desires, appetites, affections, purposes and endeavors”, “which shall fulfill all my will” or “who will complete, accomplish, prepare and produce each, every, the whole and everything in my, God the Heavenly Father's, pleasure and desire”. Luke shared how God the Heavenly Father bore record of King David, the son of Jesse, whom He declared to be a “man” with “desires, appetites, affections, purposes and affections” according to God the Father. “David” was the “man” through whom He would complete His “pleasure and desire” among people.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we discover how “Paul” continued to remind the people in the synagogue in Antioch in Pisidia of their history. He told them about God removing “Saul” from his position of king only to be replace with the son of Jesse, David, who was deemed by God to be a “man after His own heart”. God chose “David” to fulfill His purposes and will, and “David” was chosen to be the “fore-father” of God's Son and Messiah Jesus. “Paul” was leading the people in the synagogue to “Jesus” who alone is able to eternally forgive sins and grant everlasting life. Anyone who surrenders their life to “Jesus” aligns with God's plan of redemption for mankind, and those who submit will enjoy a relationship with God for all eternity.

Desiring a King - Acts 13:21

The beloved physician Luke wrote, “when Paul and his company loosed from Paphos, they came to Perga in Pamphylia: and John departing from them returned to Jerusalem. And after that he gave unto them judges about the space of four hundred and fifty years, until Samuel the prophet”, and in chapter thirteen and verse twenty-one of the book of Acts Luke shared how Paul said, “afterward they desired a king” where we read:

And afterward they desired a king: and God gave unto them Saul the son of Cis,

a man of the tribe of Benjamin, by the space of forty years.

The verse begins, “And afterward they desired a king: and God gave unto them Saul the son of Cis, ... Luke began with the words, “and afterward” which means “and following the time of the judges” “they desired a king” or “the people of Israel wanted, craved and demanded a royal leader of the people, prince, commander and lord of the land”: “and God” which refers to “and the Heavenly Father God” “gave unto them” which means “granted, bestowed, furnished and supplied to the people of Israel” “Saul” whose name means “desired” “the son of Cis” which means “the male offspring and prodigy belonging to Kish whose name means a snare”. Luke shared how the people of Israel demanded a “king”, so “the Heavenly Father God” provided “King Saul” who was “Kish's” son.

The verse continues, “... a man of the tribe of Benjamin, by the space of forty years. Luke added the words, “a man of the tribe of Benjamin” which means “a male human being from the clan or kindred belonging to Benjamin whose name means son of the right hand or son of good fortune” “by the space of forty years” or “for a forty year length of time”. Luke shared how “Saul” was from the “kindred or clan” known as “Benjamin” and served as “king” of Israel for “forty years”.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the people of Israel were not satisfied with “judges” from God, (See 1 Samuel 8), so they wanted “Samuel” to provide them with a “king” like the other nations around them. God provided them with “Saul” who was from the “tribe of Benjamin”, and he, according to Paul, served them for “forty years”. This was another step in the process for bringing God's Son Jesus to the earth so He could die for the sins of mankind. God loves people and wants a relationship with each of them through His Son Jesus. Anyone who yields their life to Him will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life with God. Let all who read these words understand, even the granting of a “king” was part of God's plan to redeem mankind from their sins.
