Luke the physician wrote how, “Herod was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidon: but they came with one accord to him, and, having made Blastus the king's chamberlain their friend, desired peace; because their country was nourished by the king's country. And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them”, and in chapter twelve and verse twenty-one of the book of Acts Luke shared how, “the people gave a shout, saying, it is the voice of a god, and not of a man” where we read:
And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man.
The verse begins, “And the people gave a shout, saying, ...” Luke began with the words, “And the people” which means “and the human beings both male and female” “gave a shout” or “exclaimed and cried aloud”, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” the following words. Luke shared how the people in the crowd began to cry aloud the following words.
The verse continues, “... It is the voice of a god, and not of a man.” Luke added the words, “it is the voice” which means “this is noised abroad, sounded and spoken with the tone of uttered words” “of a god” or “belonging to a deity or supreme being”, “and not of a man” which means “and neither in any way like unto a male human being”. Luke shared how the people within the crowd attributed “Herod's voice” to be that of a “god” and not a human being.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the people who were assembled proclaimed “Herod's voice” to be that of a “god” rather than just a simple man. This elevation of “Herod” will be addressed by “God's angel” in our next verse, but let us be mindful that “Herod” was given credit for the ability to speak which he could have in no way done with his own ability. God grants gifts to people, and all praise should be unto Him. Anyone who receives “glory and praise” that belongs to God Almighty is in great danger of receiving what “Herod” received. God loves people, and when they align with His plan of salvation through His Son Jesus, they attribute all praise and glory to Him. Let all who read these words yield themselves to Jesus who alone is to be glorified and given credit for the gifts He gives to mankind.
Next time Luke shares how, “immediately the angel of the Lord smote him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
