Luke the physician wrote how, “Herod was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidon: but they came with one accord to him, and, having made Blastus the king's chamberlain their friend, desired peace; because their country was nourished by the king's country. And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them. And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man. And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost”, and in chapter twelve and verse twenty-three of the book of Acts Luke shared how, “the word of God grew” where we read:
But the word of God grew and multiplied.
The verse begins, “But the word of God grew ...” Luke began with the words, “but the word of God” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the speech, utterance, sayings, mandate, decree and moral precepts belonging to the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit” “grew” or “increased, was augmented and enlarged”. Luke shared how “God's word” continued to spread abroad.
The verse continues, “... and multiplied.” Luke added the words, “and multiplied” which means “and abounded”. Luke shared how “God's word” grew abundantly.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the “word of God” continued to spread among people. Jesus told His disciples, “you shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth”, (See Acts 1:8) and the fulfillment of His words was taking place. God loves every person in the world, and He desires to spend eternity with them through a personal relationship with His Son Jesus. Anyone who believes and trusts in Jesus will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life with God. Let all who read these words understand, nothing on earth will stop the spreading of God's word, and His word continues to “grow and multiply” unto this day.
Next time Luke shares how, “Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
