No Small Stir about Peter - Acts 12:18

The physician Luke wrote how Peter, “was kept in prison”, and after an angel led him out, “Peter was come to himself, … he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying. And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda. And when she knew Peter's voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate. And they said unto her, you are mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel. But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished. But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go show these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place”, and in chapter twelve and verse eighteen of the book of Acts Luke shared how, “there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter” where we read:

Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter.

The verse begins, “Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, ... Luke began with the words, “now as soon as it was day” which means “moreover when the daytime happened, arose and appeared”, “there was no small stir” or “there existed no little tumult or disturbance” “among the soldiers” which means “with and between the Roman champions, guards or watchmen”. Luke shared how “daylight” appeared, and there was a great “commotion” among the “Roman guards” and watchmen.

The verse continues, “... what was become of Peter. Luke added the words, “what was become” which means “as to what happened, came into existence and came to pass” “of Peter” or “with Peter whose name means a little rock or stone and was one of Jesus' disciples”. Luke shared how the “soldiers” were in a “great tumult” over what happened to “Peter”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we can imagine how upset these “guards” were over “Peter” being gone from the “prison”. “Peter” escaped, and they were responsible to watch over him. God performed a supernatural miracle that delivered “Peter” even though he was being guarded, and when the “guards” who were chained to him and the watchmen assigned to the first and second “ward” saw no sign of “Peter” leaving, they were all disturbed. God is able to do things in the midst of those who are supposed to be “watching”, and He is willing to save every person who yields themselves to His Son Jesus. He promised to forgive the sins and grant everlasting life to anyone who believes and trusts in Jesus, and even when they live in “prison-like” conditions where everyone is watching, He will rescue them supernaturally from every bondage of sin.

Next time Luke shares how Herod, “examined the keepers”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
