The beloved physician Luke shared how “Paul departed from Athens, and came to Corinth;”, and in chapter eighteen and verse two of the book of Acts Luke shared how Paul, “found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla” where we read:
And found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla; (because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome:) and came unto them.
The verse reads, “And found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla;” Luke began with the words, “and found a certain Jew” which means “and Paul discovered and came to know a particular person who was part of the Jewish nation by origin, birth or religion” “named Aquila” or “whose name is Aquila which means an eagle and was a Jew of Pontus, a tent maker convert to Christ, companion and ally of Paul in propagating Christianity”, “born in Pontus” which means “birthed in the city of Pontus”, “lately come from Italy” or “who of late arose and appeared from the country whose name means calf like and was the whole peninsula between the Alps and the Straits of Messina”, “with his wife Priscilla” which means “alongside Aquila's female spouse whose name was Priscilla which means ancient”. Luke shared how “Paul” discovered a Jewish married couple whose names were “Aquila and Priscilla” who came to “Corinth” from “Italy”.
The verse continues, “(because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome:) and came unto them. ” Luke parenthetically added the words, “(because that Claudius” or “since and on account that Claudius whose name means lame and refers to Caesar the name of the fourth Roman emperor, who came to power in 41 A.D. and was poisoned by his wife Agrippina, in 54 A.D.” “had commanded all Jews” which means “ordered, appointed, prescribed and gave order for each, every, the whole and everyone who was from the Jewish nation by origin, birth and religion” “to depart from Rome” or “to separate, leave and go forth from Rome whose name means strength and was the famous capital of the ancient world”). “and came” which means “and arose and appeared” “unto them” or “to Aquila and Priscilla”. Luke parenthetically added the reason “Aquila and Priscilla” left Italy which was because “Claudius Caesar” ordered every “Jew” to leave the city of “Rome”, and how “Paul” came forth to them.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn not only how “Paul” met “Aquila and Priscilla” in Corinth, but also why they were in Corinth in the first place. “Claudius Caesar” gave an order for all the “Jewish people” to depart from the city of Rome, Italy, and “Aquila and Priscilla” had to leave. They went to “Corinth” where we shall see how they not only became believers in Jesus, but also worked alongside of “Paul”. God's desire is to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when they yield themselves to Him, He will forgive their sins and grant them everlasting life. Sometimes a natural or unnatural event will put people in a location where they can receive the message of His gospel of salvation, and those who are wise will surrender themselves to Him and understand His determination to allow them to hear His good news.
Next time Luke shares since Paul, “was of the same craft, he abode with them, and worked: for by their occupation they were tentmakers”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
