Luke the beloved physician shared how “Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, You men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are too superstitious. For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore you ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you. God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwells not in temples made with hands”, and in chapter seventeen and verse twenty-five of the book of Acts Luke shared how God, “neither is worshiped with men's hands, as though he needed anything” where we read:
Neither is worshiped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing,
seeing he gives to all life, and breath, and all things;
The verse begins, “Neither is worshiped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, ...” Luke began with the words, “neither is worshiped” which means “no and not in any way is God praised, adored and revered” “with men's hands” or “by the use of people's physical hands”, “as though he needed any thing” which means “like God was in want, desire or lacking in any particular or certain thing”. Luke shared how “Paul” referred to how “God” was not “adore or revered” by the physical hands of people like He was lacking in any certain thing.
The verse continues, “... seeing he gives to all life, and breath, and all things;” Luke added the words, “seeing he gives to all life” or “because and since God Himself grants, supplies, furnishes and bestows to each, every, the whole and everyone the absolute fullness of life which is real, genuine, active and vigorous”, “and breath” which means “and respiration or the ability to breathe”, “and all things” or “and each, every, the whole and everything that may be obtained”. Luke shared how “Paul” said it was “God” who provided people with the ability to live, breath and have things in the world.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how “Paul” told the “philosophers in Athens” that the “Creator God” of heaven and earth was responsible for providing life and breath to every person who was alive, and therefore He was without the “need” to be “worshiped” by “men's hands” such as building a “temple” in which people could reverence Him. God provides all things pertaining to life, and even the “breath” within a person is given by Him. God has given people the ability to “choose” to have a personal relationship with Him or not, and when they submit to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for their sins, they will be forgiven and granted everlasting life with Him. God created everyone, sustains the life in everyone, and knows they will die physically because of sins. He made a way through His Son Jesus to live with Him forever. Those who are wise will carefully study who God is and what He has provided and yield themselves to Him.
Next time Luke shares how God, “has made of one blood all nations of men”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
