In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “Jericho was straitly shut up because of the children of Israel: none went out, and none came in. And the LORD said unto Joshua, See, I have given into your hand Jericho, and the king thereof, and the mighty men of valor. And you shall compass the city, all you men of war, and go round about the city once. Thus shall you do six days. And seven priests shall bear before the ark seven trumpets of rams' horns: and the seventh day you shall compass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets”, and in chapter six and verse five of the book of Joshua, we learn how Jehovah God told Joshua what will happen, “when they make a long blast with the ram's horn” where we read,
And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall ascend up every man straight before him.
,
The verse reads, “And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, …” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and it shall come to pass” which means “and the following will happen and occur”, “that when they make a long blast” or “that at the time and moment they, the seven spiritual leaders, proceed and draw out a lengthy thrusting or blowing” “with the ram’s horn” which means “by the use of the cornets fashioned with the horns of a ram”, the following also is to happen. Jehovah God told Joshua that at the time and moment the spiritual leaders make a lengthy blast with the “seven” cornets made from the horns of a ram the following is simultaneously to occur.
The verse continues, “and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout;” Joshua added the words, “and when you hear the sound” or “and at the time and moment you, Joshua and the people of Israel, perceive, notice and discern the blasting noise” “of the trumpet” which means “belonging to the cornet fashioned from a ram’s horn”, “all the people” or “each, every and whole of the human beings of Israel” “shall shout with a great shout” which means “will raise a sound, give a blast and make an alarm”. Jehovah God told Joshua at the time and moment he and the people of Israel perceived the noise of the blast of the ram’s horns, they were to make a loud and intense noise with their voices.
Finally the verse says, “and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall ascend up every man straight before him.” Joshua or the writer ended this verse with the words, “and the wall of the city” which means “and the barrier wall belonging to the dwelling place and town of Jericho” “shall fall down flat” or “will be cast down and lie under and beneath”, “and the people shall ascend up” which means “and the human beings or warriors from Israel will climb, shoot forth and mount up” “every man straight before him” or “each, all and the whole males toward what is in front and in the sight of them”. Jehovah God told Joshua that the barrier wall to the city of Jericho would be cast to the ground, and the people of Israel were to climb up the area that was in front of them.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how Jehovah God continued to give instructions to Joshua for himself and the people of Israel as they entered into Jericho. The “seven priests” were to blast their horns for a long period of time, and the people were to shout aloud which would cause the barrier wall to the city to be cast down. As soon as the wall fell, the men of Israel were to climb up into the city wherever they were located. God was to deliver “Jericho” into the people of Israel’s hands, and when they followed His instructions, they would seize the promised land. In like manner, God has made a way for us to live with Him forever, and when we yield to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and equip us with His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth step by step in accordance with His perfect will and purpose for our lives.
Next time we learn how Joshua tells the priests, “take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the LORD”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
