Attempt to Seize Jesus Again - John 10:39

John the apostle wrote how Jesus said, I and my Father are one. Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him. Jesus answered them, Many good works have I showed you from my Father; for which of those works do you stone me? The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone you not; but for blasphemy; and because that you, being a man, make yourself God. Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, You are gods? If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken. Say you of him, whom the Father has sanctified, and sent into the world, You blaspheme; because I said, I am the Son of God? If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not. But if I do, though you believe not me, believe the works: that you may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him, and in chapter ten and verse thirty-nine of his book John shared how the Jews, “sought again to take him” where we read:

Therefore they sought again to take him: but he escaped out of their hand,

The verse reads,Therefore they sought again to take him: John began with the words, “therefore they sought again” which means “then, wherefore and on this account the Jewish people strove for, desired, craved and demanded another time” “to take him” or “to lay hold of, capture and apprehend Jesus in order to imprison Him”. John shared how Jesus' words only caused the “Jewish people” who desired to “stone” Him to want to “capture” Him once again.

The verse continues, but he escaped out of their hand, John added the words, “but he escaped” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover he, Jesus, left, departed and left for safety” “out of their hand” or “from the Jewish people's might, activity and power”. John shared how Jesus “departed safely” away from the “Jewish people's” grasp.

When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus' words only served to infuriate and motivate the Jewish people to “capture” and “stone” Him even more. Jesus simply “moved” from their presence without them being able to carry out their pernicious deeds, and because He is the “Savior and Lord” of the world, no one was able to prevent His intention to die on the cross for the sins of mankind. God loves people, and He desires to have a personal relationship with them through His Son Jesus, and those who are wise will not attempt to “eliminate” Him, but will humble themselves and surrender to His forgiving ways.

Next time John shares how Jesus, “went away again beyond Jordan”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
