The apostle John wrote, “There was a division therefore again among the Jews for these sayings” of Jesus, and in chapter ten and verse twenty of his book John shared how, “many of them said, He has a devil, and is mad” where we read:
And many of them said, He has a devil, and is mad; why hear you him?
The verse reads, “And many of them said, He has a devil, and is mad;” John began with the words, “and many of them said” which means “and a lot or great number of the people listening to Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “He has a devil” or “He, Jesus, holds, owns and is possessed with an evil spirit or messenger and minister or the devil”, “and is mad” which means “and exists as not in his right mind, beside himself and ravening as a maniac”. John shared how a great number of the people listening to Jesus said He was “demon-possessed” and “crazy”.
The verse goes on to say, “why hear you him?” John continued with the words, “why hear you” which means “for what reason and cause do you, people surrounding Jesus, listen and hearken to” “him” or “Jesus”? John shared how the people who claimed Jesus “has a devil, and is mad” wondered “why” any of the people accompanying Him would listen to what He had to say.
When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we discover the opinion “many” people developed about Jesus. They thought He was “demon-possessed” and “crazy”, so they marveled that anyone would listen to Him. Jesus was and is not “demon-possessed”, and He certainly is not a “maniac”. Those who think this are wrong because Jesus is the Son of the Living God who was sent to be the “Christ and Messiah” who would save the world. God loves everyone, and He desires to have a personal relationship with everyone through His Son Jesus. Anyone who yields their life to Jesus will be forgiven of their sins and live eternally with God.
Next time John shares how, “others said, these are not the words of him that has a devil", so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
