Mindful of the Words and Commandments 2 Peter 3:2

The apostle Peter told his readers that the reason he was writing this second letter was to stir up their pure minds in remembrance. The question becomes, of what was he reminding them? In chapter three and verse two we see where he was directing their attention. We read:

That you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:

The verse begins, “That you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets,” Peter desired that those within the church “be mindful” or “full of thought about, recalling, or remembering” the words which were spoken by the holy prophets of old. Those true prophets such as Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel and more were inspired by the Holy Spirit of God to speak and write the words which the church would read. In contrast to the false prophets whom Peter shared would be among the church, Peter desired that church members remember the words of these godly men.

The verse goes on to say, “and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:” By the same inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the “apostles” of Jesus gave commandments that were worthy of being recalled. Peter, James, John, Matthew and the others gave true instruction concerning the church and daily living. They wrote words that were good for the church to remember, and once again since there would be false teachers in the church, Peter points them to the true commands.

From where do we get our inspiration of words? Are they from teachers who expound the truth or from some other source? Within these words of Peter we can see his effort to keep the church aligned with the words and commands of reliable sources that they fall not away. As we consider Peter's words, perhaps we should take inventory once again and note whether we are “mindful” of the words of the holy prophets and the commandment of the apostles, or do we place our trust in other resources. May the Lord lead us to a greater understanding of the value of His Word.

Next time we will see how scoffers shall appear in the last days, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow...there is more...
