When Bidden to a Wedding - Luke 14:8

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus, “put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them,”, and in chapter fourteen and verse eight of his book Luke shared how Jesus told what to do, “when you are bidden of any man to a wedding” where we read:

When you are bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room;

lest a more honorable man than you be bidden of him;

The verse reads, “When you are bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room;” Luke began with the words, “When you are bidden” or “at the time and moment a person whether male or female is invited and called by name to attend” “of any man” which means “by whatever person whether male or female” “to a wedding” or “to attend a marriage feast or banquet”, “sit not down” which means “do not be seated” “in the highest room” or “within the chief, uppermost and first reclining place at the dinner or meal”. Luke shared how Jesus instructed people who were “invited” to a “marriage banquet” were not to be “seated” within the “uppermost and first” reclining places within which to eat.

The verse continues, “lest a more honorable man than you be bidden of him;” Luke added the words, “lest a more honorable man than you” or “whether perhaps and in no way a person who is held in greater honor, prize and preciousness” “be bidden of him” which means “be invited and called by name to attend by the host of the wedding”. Luke shared how Jesus presented the possibility that someone who is of “greater importance and honor” could have been “invited” to the “marriage feast”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn what Jesus said about being “seated” when a person is “invited” to a “marriage feast”. They were not to seek out and be seated within the “room” of greatest standing because someone who is of “greater importance” may have been “invited” as well. The idea was to be “humble” when “invited” to events, and rather than “pridefully” exalting one's position, there was to be a “submission” and “lowliness” exhibited to others. God sent His Son Jesus who humbled Himself to become as a man so He could identify with people and die for their sins. As Paul the apostle wrote, Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” (See Philippians 2:5-8). Those who are wise will receive this word from Jesus and humble themselves when invited to places where most people seek preeminence and self-exaltation.

A Parable to Those Who Chose Chief Rooms - Luke 14:7

The beloved physician Luke wrote about Jesus, “And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him. And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy. And Jesus answering spoke unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day? And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go. And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day? And they could not answer him again to these things”, and in chapter fourteen and verse seven of his book Luke shared how Jesus, “put forth a parable to those which were bidden” and “chose out the chief rooms” where we read:

And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden,

when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them,

The verse reads, “And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, ...” Luke began with the words, “And he put forth” or “and Jesus taught, directed and spoke” “a parable” which means “an earthly story with a heavenly meaning” “to those which were bidden” or “to the people who were invited and called by name to attend”. Luke shared how Jesus began to share another earthly story which had a heavenly meaning to the people who were invited to the Pharisee's home.

The verse goes on to say, “... when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them,” Luke continued with the words, “when he marked” or “at the time and moment Jesus observed and paid attention to” “how they chose out” which means “the manner and way the invited guest picked out and selected” “the chief rooms” or “the uppermost and highest rooms”; “saying unto them” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming to the invited guests” the words which follow in the next verse. Luke shared how Jesus observed the manner in which the invited guest selected the “uppermost and highest rooms” in the home to be seated for the meal.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus noticed the way people were “choosing” the best rooms in the house to be fed. Rather than giving place for others to be seated or fed first, they wanted the “best places” for themselves. Jesus would use their actions to share another earthly story with a heavenly meaning, and we shall discover what He says in the next verse. For now let it suffice us to know Jesus observes every time people exalt themselves over others. He desires to have a personal relationship with every person, and when they yield themselves to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” they begin to know how Jesus exalted them over Himself when He died in their place upon the cross.

Unable to Answer Jesus - Luke 14:6

The beloved physician Luke wrote concerning Jesus, “And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him. And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy. And Jesus answering spoke unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day? And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go. And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day?”, and in chapter fourteen and verse six of his book Luke shared how, “they could not answer him again” where we read:

And they could not answer him again to these things.

The verse reads, “And they could not answer him again, ...” Luke began with the words, “And they could not” or “and the Pharisees within the chief Pharisee's home were unable and incapable to” “answer him again” which means “respond, contradict, reply and dispute another time”. Luke shared how the Pharisees within the “chief Pharisee's” home were unable to “respond” to Jesus' question.

The verse continues, “... to these things.” Luke added the words, “to these things” or “to Jesus' questions about whether it was lawful to heal on the sabbath day or whether they would set free their ox or donkey upon the Sabbath day”. Luke shared how the Pharisees were unable to answer Jesus' questions concerning “healing” and setting “animals” free on the “Sabbath day”.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the Pharisees were incapable of answering Jesus' questions concerning the “Sabbath day” activities. God created the “Sabbath day” for mankind to rest from their labors, and rather than holding a strict rule concerning that day, people were to be willing to “give aid” to others. The Pharisees would have easily rescued one of their “animals” on the “Sabbath day”, but they were opposed to helping this man with “the dropsy”. God cares for everyone, and when they yield their lives to His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they understand God's desire to help every person regardless of the day of the week.

Pulling a Donkey or Ox from a Pit - Luke 14:5

The beloved physician Luke wrote about Jesus, “And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him. And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy. And Jesus answering spoke unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day? And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go”, and in chapter fourteen and verse five of his book Luke shared how, “they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him” where we read:

And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit,

and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day?

The verse reads, “And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, ...” Luke began with the words, “And answered them” or “and Jesus responded and began to speak”, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “which of you shall have a donkey” or “what person among you Pharisees will own and possess a donkey” “or an ox” which means “or an oxen” “fallen into a pit” or “that has fallen into, entrapped or overwhelmed with a well or hole in the ground”. Luke shared how Jesus presented the idea of one of the Pharisee having an “ox or donkey” that had “fallen” into a ditch, hole or well.

The verse goes on to say, “... and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day?” Luke continued with the words, “and will not straightway pull him out” or “and does not immediately and forthwith extricate and draw out the ox or donkey away from the pit” “on the sabbath day” which means “upon the seventh day of each week which was a sacred festival on which the Israelites were required to abstain from all work”? Luke shared how Jesus questioned the Pharisees as to which of them would not “extricate” their “ox or donkey” from the hole even though it was the “Sabbath day”.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus continued His questioning of the Pharisees within the “chief Pharisee's” home by employing the idea of one of their domesticated animals falling into a hole or ditch on the “Sabbath day”. Jesus wanted to demonstrate their care for their “animals” regardless of what day of the week it was, and should they not have cared for this man with “the dropsy”? God cares for people continually, and those who yield their lives to His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” align with His purpose and compassion for all the world. Man made rules and traditions do not supersede God's care and willingness to “save” mankind, and those who are wise will carefully consider Jesus' concern for this man with the dropsy and His willingness to override any rule these Pharisees had made.

Next time Luke shares how the Pharisees, “could not answer” Jesus, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Holding Their Peace - Luke 14:4

The beloved physician Luke wrote concerning Jesus, “And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him. And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy. And Jesus answering spoke unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?”, and in chapter fourteen and verse four of his book Luke shared how, “they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him” where we read:

And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go;

The verse reads, “And they held their peace.” Luke began with the words, “And they held” or “and the Pharisees within the chief priests house kept and refrained” “their peace” which means “the Pharisees' quiet rest and meddlesome speech”. Luke shared how the Pharisees answered not word to Jesus' question concerning the lawfulness of “healing” on the “Sabbath day”.

The verse continues, “And he took him, and healed him, and let him go;” Luke added the words, “and he took him” or “and Jesus lay hold of and seized the man who had the dropsy”, “and healed him” which means “and cured and made the man whole”, “and let him go” or “and dismissed, set free and permitted the man to leave and depart”. Luke shared how Jesus lay hold of the man with dropsy, cured him and set him free.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn of another miracle performed by Jesus on the “Sabbath day”. Though the Pharisees were against such an act, Jesus did it anyway because His caring love was greater than the “man made” rule that no one should work for any reason on the “Sabbath day”. Jesus came to “save” mankind, and He desires a personal relationship with them. When they yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, He not only forgives their sins and provides everlasting life, but He also will meet their needs regardless of the tradition of men or upon which day of the week it falls.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus asks, “which of you shall have a donkey or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the Sabbath day?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Behind Hell's Gates

What is this place of tortured mind

where all alone I spend my time

the heat too great for one to bear

and anguish cause such great despair

Where all alone I spend my time

remembering I was alive

and anguish cause such great despair

while wondering did someone care

Remembering I was alive

and had my turn within my prime

while wondering did someone care

did one know yet that I'd be here

And had my turn within my prime

that I'd be lost this paradigm

did one know yet that I'd be here

and speak their words that I'd be cleared

That I'd be lost this paradigm

and I'd be saved not spend a dime

and speak their words that I'd be cleared

not say a prayer that God might hear

And I'd be saved not spend a dime

for other things were on their minds

not say a prayer that God might hear

nor mission send that I might fear

For other things were on their minds

while I was lost within my crime

nor mission send that I might fear

deliver me from wretched sphere

While I was lost within my crime

now wailing is my constant chime

deliver me from wretched sphere

and gnashing teeth that I must drear

Now wailing is my constant chime

for God's salvation I denied

and gnashing teeth that I must drear

I'll spend eternity in tears

For God's salvation I denied

the cross upon which Jesus died

I'll spend eternity in tears

while resurrected life so near

Is It Lawful to Heal on the Sabbath Day? - Luke 14:3

The beloved physician Luke wrote, “And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him. And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy”, and in chapter fourteen and verse three of his book Luke shared how Jesus asked, “Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?” where we read:

And Jesus answering spoke unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying,

Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?

The verse reads, “And Jesus answering spoke unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, ...” Luke began with the words, “And Jesus answering” or “and the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation responded and beginning to answer” “spoke unto the lawyers” which means “uttered, declared and proclaimed to ones learned in the law who served as both interpreters and teachers” “and Pharisees” or “and ones who belonged to the sect that seems to have started after the Jewish exile. In addition to Old Testament books the Pharisees recognized in oral tradition a standard of belief and life”, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” the following words. Luke shared how Jesus began to speak to the “Pharisees” who were in the home where He was invited to eat and where He observed the man with the “dropsy”.

The verse goes on to say, “... Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?” Luke continued with the words, “Is it lawful” or “is it according to the law and right” “to heal” which means “to cure, make whole, restore to health and do service” “on the sabbath day” or “upon the seventh day of each week which was a sacred festival on which the Israelites were required to abstain from all work”? Luke shared how Jesus questioned the “Pharisees” as to whether it was “right” to “cure” people on the “Sabbath day”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus began to challenge the “normal thinking” within these “religious leaders”. The “Pharisees” had “rules” concerning “working” on the “Sabbath day”, and even if a person could be “healed” from an illness, they did not agree that this “work or service” should be done. God loves every person, and He knows the illnesses and afflictions that have come upon every one of them. He knows what it takes to “save” mankind from their “sins”, and He sent Jesus to to die on the cross so they may be forgiven of their sins and live with Him forever. Jesus violated “man-made” laws to fulfill the “law of God”, and those who examine His life will find He is willing to serve people both “physically” and “spiritually” on any day He chooses.

Next time Luke shares how, “they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
