Abominable, Vile and a Gazingstock Nahum 3:6

Nahum the prophet wrote concerning the city of Nineveh and declared, “Behold, I am against you, says the LORD of hosts”. He told them the LORD would “discover” their “skirts upon” their “face” and “show the nations” their “nakedness, and the kingdoms” their “shame”. In chapter three and verse six of his prophesy, Nahum shared how the LORD would “cast abominable filth” upon them, and make them “vile” as well as “a gazingstock” where we read:

And I will cast abominable filth upon you, and make you vile, and will set you as a gazingstock.

The verse begins, “And I will cast abominable filth upon you, and make you vile,...” Nahum began with the words, “And I will cast” or “throw, hurl and fling” “abominable filth” or “detestable things or idols” “upon you” which refers to Nineveh, “and make you” which refers to Nineveh “vile” which means “senseless, foolish and treated with contempt”. In addition to the conquest of the invading army, the LORD was to “fling” “detestable things and idols” upon them which would cause them to be “treated with contempt”.

The verse continues, “.... and will set you as a gazingstock” Nahum added, “and will set you” which means “put, appoint, set, direct and lay them aside” “as a gazingstock” or “looking, appearance, seeing sight and spectacle”. Because of the “abominable filth” and “vileness”, Nineveh would become a “spectacle” before all who looked upon them.

When we think through these words of Nahum, not only do we see the defeat of this great city of Nineveh, but they were to encounter the “abominable filth” the LORD would put upon them. They were to be repulsive and grotesque to the point people would stair at them in angst. Those who reject Jesus Christ as Savior and LORD will know the wrath of God, and Jesus said those whom He came to save will be where there is “weeping and gnashing of teeth”. Oh that people would understand that Jesus came to save them, and does not desire to put “abominable filth and vileness” upon them so they would one day be the “gazingstock” before others.

Next time Nahum shares how those who look on Nineveh “shall flee from” them, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
