Luke the physician wrote how, “Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour. And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance, And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth. Wherein were all manner of four-footed beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air. And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat. But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean. And the voice spoke unto him again the second time, What God has cleansed, that call not you common. This was done three times: and the vessel was received up again into heaven. Now while Peter doubted in himself what this vision which he had seen should mean, behold, the men which were sent from Cornelius had made inquiry for Simon's house, and stood before the gate, ...”, and in chapter ten and verse eighteen of the book of Acts Luke shared how the men, “asked whether Simon … were lodged there” where we read:
And called, and asked whether Simon, which was surnamed Peter, were lodged there.
The verse begins, “And called, and asked whether Simon, which was surnamed Peter, ...” Luke began with the words, “and called” which means “and sounded, spoke and summoned”, “and asked whether Simon” or “and questioned or inquired if Simon whose name means a rock or stone”, “which was surnamed Peter” which means “who was called and invoked as Peter whose name means a little rock or stone and was one of Jesus' disciples”. Luke shared how the men sent by “Cornelius” inquired about “Peter”.
The verse goes on to say, “... were lodged there.” Luke continued with the words, “were lodged there” which means “was received as a guest and living in Simon's house”. Luke shared how “Cornelius' men” wanted to know if “Peter” was staying in “Simon's” home.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the men sent by “Cornelius” desired to know if “Peter” was staying in the home of “Simon”. The mission of “Cornelius' men” was almost complete, and they needed to find out if “Peter” was in the home to which they were directed. Step by step God's plan was coming together, and these men were being used by the Lord Jesus to fulfill His purposes. God loves people, and He is in pursuit of every person. When they submit to His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive their sins and grant them everlasting life. Let all who read these words know that God the Father knows where they are, and He is in pursuit of them wherever they may be.
Next time Luke shares how the Spirit says to Peter, “Behold, three men seek you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
