The physician Luke wrote, “then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied”, and in chapter nine and verse thirty-two of the book of Acts Luke shared how Peter, “came down also to the saints which dwelt at Lydda” where we read:
And it came to pass, as Peter passed throughout all quarters,
he came down also to the saints which dwelt at Lydda.
The verse begins, “And it came to pass, as Peter passed throughout all quarters, ...” Luke began with the words, “and it came to pass” which means “and it happened and came into being”, “as Peter” or “while and during the time Peter whose name means a little rock or stone and was one of Jesus' disciples” “passed throughout all quarters” which means “traveled and journeyed in each, every, the whole and everywhere the churches were located” the following occurred. Luke shared how “Peter” traveled to all the areas where the churches were being established.
The verse continues, “... he came down also to the saints which dwelt at Lydda.” Luke added the words, “he came down also” which means “even so and indeed Peter descended” “to the saints” or “to the pure, sacred, morally blameless and religiously and ceremonially consecrated believers in Jesus”, “which dwelt at Lydda” which means “who lived, settled and resided in Lydda whose name means strife and was a town nine miles (15 km) from Joppa, and is the first town on the northernmost of the two roads between that place and Jerusalem”. Luke shared how “Peter” descended to the town of “Lydda” during his venture to visit the churches that were established.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how “Peter” was reintroduced for this portion of scripture pertaining to the church of Jesus. “Peter” began to travel to the churches that were being established and went to the town of “Lydda”. We shall see what happens in “Lydda” in our next verses, but for now let us understand that God was building His church, and believers were arising from places spread out from Jerusalem. God's desire is to have everyone in the world have an opportunity to know His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, and as the events unfold which happened to “Peter” in “Lydda”, let us be aware that He will forgive the sins of anyone who yields to His Son Jesus, and He will use them in His Kingdom to share His message to everyone.
Next time Luke shares how Peter, “found a certain man named Aeneas”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
