Luke the physician wrote, “as Peter passed throughout all quarters, he came down also to the saints which dwelt at Lydda.”, and in chapter nine and verse thirty-three of the book of Acts Luke shared how Peter, “found a certain man named Aeneas” where we read:
And there he found a certain man named Aeneas,
which had kept his bed eight years, and was sick of the palsy.
The verse begins, “And there he found a certain man named Aeneas, ...” Luke began with the words, “and there he found a certain man” which means “and in Lydda Peter discovered a particular male human being” “named Aeneas” or “who was called and known as Aeneas whose name means laudable”. Luke shared how “Peter” discovered “Aeneas” in the town of “Lydda”.
The verse goes on to say, “... which had kept his bed eight years, and was sick of the palsy.” Luke continued with the words, “which had kept his bed eight years” which means “who had lain down, reclined and prostrated himself upon his pallet or mattress for eight years”, “and was sick” or “and was infirm, afflicted and ill”, “of the palsy” which means “with suffering from the relaxing of the nerves, unstrung and weak of limb”. Luke shared how “Aeneas” suffered from an illness which made him have “weak limbs”.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn about the illness of “Aeneas” who was suffering from a weakness in his limbs. This caused him to lay in his “bed” for eight long years. We can imagine the troubles and difficulties this caused “Aeneas”, and “Peter” was about to change his life forever. God knows the illnesses people encounter, and even as Jesus demonstrated His willingness to cure and make people whole, He desires to do so today. God's purposes are eternal in nature, and when a person has a “physical need”, God knows their “spiritual need for Him” as well. Those who carefully examine this miracle to be performed upon “Aeneas” should keep in mind that God desires an eternal relationship with every person, and He forgives sins and grants eternal life to everyone who puts their faith and trust in His Son Jesus.
Next time Luke shares how Peter says, “Aeneas, Jesus Christ makes you whole, arise, and make your bed”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
