The physician Luke wrote how two servants and a soldier of Cornelius went to Joppa to find Peter. After arriving at Simon's house where Peter was staying, they met him and said, “Cornelius the centurion, a just man, and one that fears God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from God by an holy angel to send for you into his house, and to hear words of you. Then called he them in, and lodged them. And on the morrow Peter went away with them, and certain brethren from Joppa accompanied him. And the morrow after they entered into Caesarea. And Cornelius waited for them, and had called together his kinsmen and near friends”, and in chapter ten and verse twenty-five of the book of Acts Luke shared, “as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him” where we read:
And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshiped him.
The verse begins, “And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, ...” Luke began with the words, “and as Peter” which means “and during the time when Peter whose name means a little rock or stone and was one of Jesus' disciples” “was coming in” or “was entering Cornelius' home”, “Cornelius met him” which means “Cornelius, whose name means of a horn and was a Roman centurion of the Italian cohort stationed in Caesarea, encountered and engaged Peter”. Luke shared how during the time “Peter” entered “Cornelius'” home, “Cornelius” immediately engaged him.
The verse continues, “... and fell down at his feet, and worshiped him.” Luke added the words, “and fell down at his feet” which means “and descended from an erect to a prostrate position toward Peter's physical feet”, “and worshiped him” or “and did homage, made obeisance and rendered supplication to Peter”. Luke shared how “Cornelius” prostrated himself at “Peter's feet” and began to give him “homage and honor”.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how “Cornelius” responded to meeting “Peter”. Not only did “Cornelius” immediately meet “Peter” as he entered his home, but he bowed on the floor before him and began to “worship” him. We shall see how “Peter” responds in our next verse, but for now, let us realize how overwhelmed “Cornelius” was at this visit from “Peter”. “Cornelius” saw this meeting in a vision, and now it was reality before His eyes. God was visiting “Cornelius” through “Peter”, and He will engage anyone who yields their life to His Son Jesus. Those who surrender their lives to Jesus will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life with God, and if it takes a special meeting by one of God's disciples and followers to help them, He will send messengers their way.
Next time Luke shares how, “Peter took him up, saying, Stand up”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
