Commanding the People - Joshua 1:11

In the book of Joshua, we learn how he, “commanded the officers of the people, saying, …”, and in chapter one and verse eleven of his book we learn how he told he officers, “pass through the host, and command the people” where we read,

Pass through the host, and command the people, saying, Prepare you victuals; for within three days you shall pass over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land, which the LORD your God gives you to possess it.

The verse reads, “Pass through the host, and command the people, saying, Prepare you victuals;” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “pass through the host” which means “cross over, traverse and travel among the encampment or body of people like an army camp”, “and command the people” or “and appoint, charge and give orders to the human beings both male and female”, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “prepare you victuals” or “set up, make firm, make stable and established you, the officers, food, provision and meat”. Joshua ordered the officers to traverse the army camp and tell them to set up food and meat.

The verse continues, “for within three days you shall pass over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land, which the LORD your God gives you to possess it.” Joshua added the words, “for within three days” or “because, since and on account that in three sunrises to sunsets” “you shall pass over this Jordan” which means “you, the host and people of Israel, will traverse and cross the Jordan River whose name means descender and was the river of Palestine running from the roots of Anti-Lebanon to the Dead Sea which was a distance of approximately 200 miles (320 km)”, “to go in to possess the land” or “to proceed and enter in to seize, dispossess and take possession of the region, district, territory and region”, “which the LORD your God” which means “that Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name of the One True God, your, the host and people of Israel’s, Supreme Deity” “gives you to possess it” or “grants, bestows, ascribes, consecrates and dedicates to you, the host and the people of Israel, to take possession of, dispossess and seize”. Joshua told the “hosts and the people of Israel” that in “three days” they would cross the River Jordan to seize the territory that Jehovah God bestows upon them.

When we think through the words in this verse, we discover how Joshua began to give instruction to the “army camp” of the people of Israel as they were to traverse the Jordan River within “three days” to seize the territory Jehovah God granted to them. God was moving among the people of Israel, and when He chose Joshua to lead them, He not only equipped him, but He also helped him to act upon his new position. God wants us to know how He cares for the people of Israel, and He cares for us as well. When He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised Him from the dead after three days, He made the way through faith and trust in Him to be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and equipped with His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and empower us to live in whatever capacity He desires for us in a similar manner that He chose for Joshua.

Next time we see how Joshua speaks to, “the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to half the tribe of Manasseh”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
