Moses is Dead - Joshua 1:2

In the book of Joshua, the writer or Joshua said, “Now after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD it came to pass, that the LORD spoke unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ minister, saying …”, and in chapter one and verse two of this book Joshua or the writer said, “Moses my servant is dead” where we read,

Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, you, and all this people,

unto the land which I give to them, even to the children of Israel.

The verse reads, “Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, you, and all this people, …” The writer or Joshua began with the words, “Moses my servant” which means “Moses whose name means drawing out and was the prophet and lawgiver as well as the leader of the exodus my, Jehovah God’s, slave, man of servile condition“is dead” or “exists as lifeless, without breath and perished”: “now therefore arise” which means “at this time wherefore, then and on this account stand up, come on the scene and be confirmed”, “go over this Jordan” or “cross and traverse this Jordan river whose name means defender and was the river of Palestine running from the roots of Anti-Lebanon to the Dead Sea a distance of approximately 200 miles (320 km)”, “you, and all this people” which means “you, Joshua, and each, every and the whole amount of the human being in Israel”. Jehovah God told Joshua “Moses” His man of servile condition had perished, and wherefore Joshua was to stand up and cross the “Jordan River” along with every one of the people of Israel.

The verse goes on to say, “… unto the land which I give to them, even to the children of Israel.” Joshua or the writer continued with the words, “unto the land” or “to the territory, region and country” “which I give to them” which means “that I, Jehovah God, shall grant, bestow and assign to them, the people of Israel”,  “even to the children” or “indeed unto the offspring and progeny” “of Israel” which means “belonging to Israel whose name means God prevails and is the name of the descendants and the nation of the descendants of Jacob”. The writer or Joshua shared how Jehovah God instructed Joshua go into the territory He gave the offspring “of Israel”.

When we mediate upon the words in this verse, we learn through the writer or Joshua after Moses died Jehovah God began to give Joshua the assignment for leading the people of “Israel”. God’s desire was to care for His people “Israel”, and their new leader would be “Joshua”. His first act would be to cross the “River Jordan” and enter into the promise land. God wants to provide for all people, and He gave His Only Begotten Son Jesus who came into the world to die on the cross from the sins of all mankind and raised Him from the dead after three days. When we submit to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and provide for us as His “children” like He did for the “children” of Israel.

Next time the Jehovah God tells Joshua what will happen in, “every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
