The Sun, Light, Moon and the Stars - Ecclesiastes 12:2

In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon said, “Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when you shall say, I have no pleasure in them”, and in chapter twelve and verse two of his book Solomon shared about, “the sun, light, the moon or the stars” where we read,

While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened,

Nor the clouds return after the rain.

The verse reads, “While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, …” Solomon began with the words, “while the sun” or “during the time the sun in the sky”, “or the light” which means “or the brightness, luminaries or illumination”, “or the moon” or “or the moon over the earth”, “or the stars” which means “or the blazing celestials which are round and shining”, “be not darkened” or “are not dim, hidden, concealed or of dark color”. Solomon said the “young man” should enjoy his life before the “sun, light, the moon or the stars” become dim and concealed to him.

The verse goes on to say, “… nor the clouds return after the rain.” Solomon continued with the words, “nor the clouds return” or “no and not in any way the thickets or cloudy masses ” “after the rain” which means “the coming back or return of the cloudy masses following the rain showers”. Solomon also instructed the “young man” to also enjoy his life before the cloudy masses come back following the rain shower.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how Solomon continued to tell the “young man” to enjoy his life in advance of the time in life when the “sun, light, the moon and the stars” grow dim to the sight, and he was also to consider the coming back of the cloudy masses following rain showers. Robert Herrick wrote, “gather ye rosebuds while ye may”, and this is the idea Solomon was conveying to the “young man” who was more than likely his son. God wants us to enjoy our lives, and because catabolic forces take their effect upon our bodies, God wants us to consider our eternal spiritual life. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when He raised Him from the dead, He made the way through faith and trust in Him to be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and equipped with His Holy Spirit so we are encouraged to take advantage of the elements surrounding us before they become too faint and dim for us to enjoy.

Next time Solomon shares about, “the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
