Then Shall the Dust Return to the Earth - Ecclesiastes 12:7

In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon shared about, “when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goes to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets. Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern”, and in chapter twelve and verse seven of his book Solomon said, “then shall the dust return to the earth as it was” where we read,

Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was, and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

The verse reads, “Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was, …” Solomon began this verse with the words, “then shall the dust return” which means “at that time will the powder, ashes and loose debris go and turn back” “to the earth” or “to the land or ground” “as it was” which means “to become similar and in likeness to the original state of the dust”. Solomon said following all the above mentioned activities, the “loose debris or dust” will go back to the ground and become as it originally was.

The verse continues, “… and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.” Solomon added the words, “and the spirit” or “and the wind, breath, mind and soul” “shall return unto God” which means “will go and turn back to the Supreme Deity” “who gave it” or “who granted, bestowed, ascribed, consecrated and entrusted it, the spirit”. Solomon said the soul and mind of a person will go back to the Supreme Deity Jehovah God who provided and entrusted it to the person.

When we meditate upon words in this verse, we learn this principle of life through Solomon: dust we are, and to dust we shall return, and our “spirits” will go back to God to be judged before Him. (See 2 Corinthians 5:10) That day may come at any time for us, and because God loves us and wants us to live with Him forever, He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of everyone and He raised Him from the dead after three days. When we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and equip us with His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and empower us to live according to that truth before our bodies “return to the dust” and our “spirits” return unto God.

Next time Solomon says, “vanity of vanities, says the preacher”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
