Joshua Commanding Officers - Joshua 1:10

In the book of Joshua, we read how Jehovah God told him, “this book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth; but you shall meditate therein day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall have good success. Have not I commanded you? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be you dismayed: for the LORD your God is with you whithersoever you go”, and in chapter one and verse ten of his book we learn how, ““Joshua commanded the officers of the people” where we read,

Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying, …

The verse reads, “Then Joshua commanded …” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “then Joshua” which means “at that time Joshua or Jehoshua whose name means Jehovah is salvation and was the son of Nun of the tribe of Ephraim and successor to Moses as the leader of the children of Israel; led the conquest of Canaan” “commanded” or “gave charge and order to” the following people. Joshua at that time gave orders to the following people.

The verse goes on to say, “… the officers of the people, saying, …” Joshua continued with the words, “the officers” or “the overseers, rulers and officials” “of the people” which means “belonging to the human beings of Israel both male and female”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” the words in our next verse. Joshua began to give orders to the officials and overseers belonging to the “people” of Israel, and he told them the words in our next verse.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how Joshua began to carry out his mission with the people of Israel. He began with the overseers and officials, and we shall see what he told them in our next verse. God is a God of order, and when He assigns someone to a position or task, He will guide and empower them to carry out that work. God has a plan for our lives as well which includes receiving His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the grave after three days. When we yield to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and give us the ability to command and be commanded according to His perfect will and purposes.

Next time we see how Joshua told the officers, “pass through the host, and command the people”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
