In the book of Joshua, we are told how Joshua said to his commanders, “pass through the host, and command the people, saying, Prepare you victuals; for within three days you shall pass over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land, which the LORD your God gives you to possess it. And to the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to half the tribe of Manasseh, spoke Joshua, saying, …”, and in chapter one and verse thirteen of his book we learn how Joshua told the officers to say, “remember the word which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you” where we read,
Remember the word which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, saying,
The LORD your God has given you rest, and has given you this land.
The verse reads, “Remember the word which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, saying, …” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “remember the word” which means “recall, call to mind and bring to remembrance the utterance, business and speech” “which Moses” or “that Moses whose name means drawing out and was the prophet, lawgiver and leader of the exodus” “the servant of the LORD” which means “the slave, man of servile condition and minister belonging to Jehovah whose name means the existing One and is the proper name of the One True God” “commanded you” or “charged, appointed and gave order to you, the Reubenites, Gadites and one-half of the tribe of Manasseh”, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” the following words.. Joshua called upon “the Reubenites, Gadites and one-half of the tribe of Manasseh” to called to mind the utterances that “Moses, God’s minister” charged to them.
The verse continues, “the LORD your God has given you rest, and has given you this land.” Joshua or the writer added the words, “the LORD” or “Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name of the One True God” “your God” which means “your, the Reubenites, Gadites and one-half of the tribe of Manasseh’s, Supreme Deity” “has given you rest” or “has granted, bestowed assigned to you, the Reubenites, Gadites and one-half of the tribe of Manasseh, the settling down, repose and quiet”, “and has given you this land” which means “and has granted, bestowed and assigned to the Reubenites, Gadites and one-half of the tribe of Manasseh the region, district and territory on the east side of the Jordan River”. Joshua told “the Reubenites, Gadites and one-half of the tribe of Manasseh” that God provided rest and repose to them as well as the territory they desired on the east side of the Jordan River.
When we meditate upon words in this verse, we learn how Joshua began to speak to “the Reubenites, Gadites and one-half of the tribe of Manasseh” by charging them to call to remembrance how Jehovah God provided them with rest, repose and the territory which they occupied on the east side of the Jordan River. God had a plan, and He was working it out. Although He desired for every tribe of Israel to enter the promise land, He permitted “the Reubenites, Gadites and one-half of the tribe of Manasseh” to remain in their state of “rest” while inheriting the territory just outside of the promise land. God wants the best for us, and our lives are better when we follow His lead throughout all our lives. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised Him from the dead after three days. Our sins separated us from a personal relationship with Him, and when we surrender to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and equip us with His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and help us seek and find all the inheritance He has planned for us.
Next time we see how Joshua says to the Reubenites, Gadites and half the tribe of Manasseh, “your wives, your little ones, and your cattle, shall remain in the land which Moses gave you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
